Show r even excellence does not prevent change of venue and the passing of torches. By nature, colleges and universities change coaching staffs according to the winds of winning and losing seasons. There were 16 EDWARDS: (Continued from Page 2) engage in what has become his life. He does not fit the description. First, since taking his first as4 sistant's job in 1962 at BYU he has stayed put, planting himself just miles from his birthplace and the site where he buried his mother and father. LaVell Edwards has never held a job as an educator outside the state of Utah. Second, Edwards has taken a football program which was mislabeled and misplaced, an orphan, and turned it into a national football power. Coaches from Miami to Los Angeles, from high school to the NFL, come to view his program and learn the BYU philosophy. It has become an enigma. Nowhere has any school passed the football with more consistency for so long than in Provo. LaVell Don ed and consistently produced solid It Edwards' record is a little strange that two of those three ties occurred last year. This summer Peterson's College and Pro Football magazine featured a unique study of college football coaches. The magazine 183-62-- ' 3. is BYU Edwards - kma' UCLA James . Third, Edwards achieved the AVAai Coach all-ti- unreachable, unattainable and unthinkable by bringing a mythical national championship to BYU in 1984. That, experts said and continue to reaffirm, cannot be done. Not on North University Avenue in Provo. Fourth, working with exponents and factors which should prevent any such football prominence at BYU, Edwards has bucked traditional recruiting paths and methods football teams with uncharacteristic football talent. Fifth, we have yet to find an instance of when LaVell Edwards, as a boss, has ever fired anyone. Some may have deserved it, the occassions must have arisen. But he has worked through it. Terminating staff is an almost necessity in management circles throughout his profession not to mention the corporate world. Sixth, surviving. By design, the coaching profession is a job where twnnr-ivi"niiMj- ti coaching changes this year, the same as a year ago. The Conference championships on the arm of a Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer, you'd think the fizz would be gone in Provo. Detmer started 40 consecutive games for Edwards and helped BYU regain its foothold atop the college football world. With Detmer gone, you'd think some of the glitz of BYU football would go with him. Not so. So respected is Edwards' program the media which covers the WAC voted his Cougars as the team to beat in 1992. That may say it all. There may be a dozen more exceptions to the rule and the mold Edwards has afforded himself in the corner of the college football world. If you take the time, you can maybe list them all. But Sept. 5 in El Paso Texas Edwards begins his 21st year as a all at BYU. head football coach And the freak show, so to speak, continues unfazed and as boldly entrenched in battle as ever. . 3 (.761 28-9-- 19-- 4 134-151-358-253-- 9( 1 (.813) 4 8 19-- 5 (.792) 703233-3- Alabama Oklahoma :Notre Dame East Carolina California Georgia Stanford Colorado Tulsa 18-- 6 ( 750) 651-228- 3 7 (.767) . The study was limited to those programs which were ranked in the Top 25 Associated Press poll at the end of the 1991 season. Also figured in was the school's winning percentage under the current coach and the years of service to that university. The magazine's study ranked the coached by giving them a rating. The highest rating by the magazine was a 6.32 and it belonged to LaVell Edwards. The nearest coach in the ratings was Joe Pater-n- o of Penn State and the Nittany Lion coach wasn't even close at 3.85.
