Now the small family is enrolled together in a treatment program, the first of its kind in Utah. The House of Hope's Mothers and Children Program is a residential treatment center for substance-abusin- g women and their children. The program opened Aug. 1, allorie's and the six women and eight children now in it celebrated last week with an open house. "This program is helping a lot," Vallorie said. "It works. If they were to kick me out for some reason, I woul probably be sleeping on their porch. That's how much I believe in it." Most treatment programs in Utah were designed with men in mind, according to Todd Hattori, Salt Lake County Division of Substance Abuse, which funds the Mothers and Children Program. Women were treated as an afterthought, if at all. And the issues surrounding their drug and alcohol dependencies are different. Ava Ashby-Bolthe program director, says addicted women are often poor and unemployed or underemployed. They are frequently divorced or separated and isolated z, from social support systems. Many are mothers whose children need their attention, but most programs separate mother and child throughout treatment. In Mothers and Children, "kids are not just being housed," Ashby-Bol- z said. "They need and receive services, too. One of the biggest barriers for women who need treatment is what to do with the children." In announcing the endorsements Christensen said it was important to replace retiring Senator Jake Garn with a "credible conservative Republican like Joe Cannon. ' ' The Republican from Sandy, also said, "Joe is a man of integrity, principle and vision. He is uniquely qualified for this office." But on Tuesday Bennett said he is the candidate who can defeat Owens. "The question in the primary is who can beat Owens in November. I am that candidate," Bennett said. Bennett argued that because his campaign is debt free and Cannon's campaign is heavily in debt, he is in the position to defeat Owens. "The question is: Do you want want one of the spenders representing you in Washington, or do Utah Women's Caucus endorses trio - SALT LAKE CITY The Utah Women's Political Caucus has endorsed three candidates who will be facing challenges in the upcoming primary election. Endorsement of those candidates who are unopposed in the primary will be made after the Sept. 8 primary election. "After careful consideration and following the evaluation surveys completed by candidates, the UWPC is pleased to announce the following endorsements," stated Karen Wildfoerster and Laurie Reed of the caucus. Stewart Hanson, candidate for governor, and his running mate Representative Paula Julander. Jan Graham, candidate for Utah Attorney General . Janet Rose, candidate forthe Salt Lake County Commission. All the candidates expressed pleasure with the endorsement. Graham paid tribute to UWPC for their "fight for fairness for women and families." Hanson and Julander said they were hdonored by the endorsement, and Rose said, "the encouragement and guidance provided by the caucus has been a source of great comfort and support for many women in Utah over the course of the past 20 years. I count myself in that number." UDOT to upgrade part of Highway 40 SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) opened bids recently on a project to upgrade the section of US Highway 40 between Silver Creek Junction and Park City Junction. Bids were submitted by three contractors with the apparent low bidder being Gilbert Western Construction company at $9,368,411. The official engineer's estimate was $11,651,188. The contract will not be awarded, however, until the bids are reviewed to make certain no errors were made and that all requirements were met. The upgrade will better meet the traffic demands of the Heber Valley and Park City areas by providing a four-lan- e highway from In- terstate 80 to Park City Junction, according to UDOT officials. This will allow for an interchange at Silver Summit and an alternate access to Park City. Work on the three mile project is expected to start this fall and is scheduled to last one year. Federal funds are providing approximately 93 percent of the project costs, with matching funds coming from the state. UDOT will administer the contract because federal funds are involved.
