Show Page THE HERALD, Ptovd, Utah, Sunday, April 5, B14 1992 Highest marks for Billings and innovative Celtic fare OREM Pa Pilchard wanted to get away from it all, so he did. He reared his family in the tops of the Canadian Rockies, 40 miles away from the nearest neighbor. This is the story of what happens when his daughter, April Ann, meets men for the first time. April Ann and the other Pitchard kids learn about the real world through the outsiders who discover them. This Hale musical written and directed by Nathan and Ruth Hale has been a favorite of many audiences for years. The leading role of April Ann is played by Mary dee Potter, a veteran at the HCT. Ma Pitchard is taken by author Ruth Hale. The chauvinistic, but handsome Art is doubled with Curt Dousett and Cody Hale. The helpful, Larry will be shared by Kurk Holshue and '..Si.:.. Cody Hale. The conference will focus on Renaissance sculpture of the late 15th century and is a follow-u- p to a conference held at BYU in April 1988 on a similar topic. All events are free and the public is welcome. Conference coordinator Steven Bule of the BYU Art Department said the conference fits in well with the Columbus quincentennial celebration currently underway at wiwim,jl, mm in. ii ' BYU. ' 'One of our goals is to examine the decade of the 1490s and the amazing events of that time in relation to sculpture and art," said man Continuing Education Building. Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Another session of this year's conference is a workshop about the teaching of the Renaissance period and how to eliminate the misconceptions surrounding the art of that time. "There is a certain bias that has been created about the Renaissance period," said Bule. "Some people look at sculpture with the idea that if the sculpture was not done by a Florentine, then it isn't good. ' ' Bule. A keynote address on Thursday by John Monfasani will open the event. He will speak on "Renaissance Humanism Rethinking Its History and Its Image" at 6 p.m. in the Rare Book Room of the Lee Library. Conference classes given by Renaissance scholars from around the world will be held in the Har- , iniiunmiiniiuiiniuwMwnmiiiMijMjjan, Conference sessions will try to seriously challenge that bias, said Bule. "The notion that Florentines were the only good artists can hinder people studying works by artists other than Florentines," said Bule. Bule said the 1988 conference was extremely well attended and gained international recognition. This year's conference is sponsored by the BYU Department of Art with the support of BYU Honors and General Education and the dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. ne m.
