"It's alarming how often we find children bashing parents and parents bashing children. We, as members of the church, need to be reminded that the words, 'Nay speak no ill, are more than a phrase in a musical context but is a recommended way of life." He said bashing should be replaced with charity, but charity is often misunderstood. "Real charity is not something you give away; it is something that you acquire and make a part of yourself," said Ashton. "And when the virtue of charity becomes implanted in your heart, you are never the same again. It makes the thought of being a basher repulsive." Faust spoke of a sure cure for heartache, disappointment, torment, anguish and despair, saying no one can escape the troubles, challenges and disappointments of the world. "This spiritual solace comes by invoking spiritual gifts, which are claimed and manifest in many ways," said Faust. "They flow from the proper and humble use of a testimony. They also come through administering to the sick following an anointing with consecrated oil. "Furthermore, temples provide a sanctuary where members can go and lay aside many of the world's anxieties. In the afternoon session, it was announced Janette C. She suc GADHAFI: (Continued from Page Al) the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270 people. The church leaders also called Virginia H. Pearce, Salt Lake City, and Patricia P. Pinegar, Provo, to serve as Hales' first and second counselors. Speakers for the session included Elder L. Tom Perry, Elder Angel Abrea, Elder William R. Bradford, Elder Adney Y. Komatsu, Elder Dallin H. Oaks and Elder Richard G. Scott. Perhaps the strongest words of the session were given by Elder Scott on the subject of abuse, saying victims can only be helped by understanding eternal law. Speaking to those who might be victims of abuse he said, "Your abuse results from another's unrighteous attack on your freedom. Since all of Father in Heaven's children enjoy agency, there can be some who choose to willfully violate the commandments and harm you," said Scott. "Know that the wicked choice of others' cannot completely destroy your agency unless you permit it. "As a victim, do not waste effort in revenge or retribution against your aggressor. Leave the handling of the offender to civil and church authorities," said Scott. "Whatever they do, eventually, the guilty will face the perfect judge." Scott encouraged victims of abuse to seek help, beginning with talking about it with a trusted priesthood leader, normally a bishop or stake president. Then, begin using the principles of healing. "Healing best begins with your sincere prayer asking your Father in Heaven for help," said Scott. Next, withhold judgment.
