Show ArtsEntertainment Tuesday, October 2, 1990 The I)ai!y Herald, Provo, Utah ' Aequalis trio performs new music Specializing in new American music on the cutting edge, Aequalis, a unique trio, will present a BYU Performing Arts Series concert Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the chamber performance, scheduled for the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center, are $7 for the public and $6 with BYU activity card. They are available at the BYU Music Ticket Office, 378- - 74.44. For the BYU recital, the ensemble will present its "Great American Works" program, an eclectic and exciting assortment of styles that includes three new trios written especially for Aequalis by composers Martin Brody, Rand Steiger and Marilyn Shrude. Shrude's work is part of the Aequalis Women Composers Project, an ongoing commitment by the group to both commission and mainstream works by American women composers. The ensemble specializes in commissioning and performing new American works. Aequalis, which roughly translates as "the Equals," includes cellist Elizabeth Mohr and pianist Fred Bronstein, who are husband and wife, and percussionist Mi. chael Parola. ensemble has The Boston-base- d much in common with San Francisco's avant- - garde Kronos string quartet that performed at BYU last spring. Both groups bring unique compositions and composers to the standard recital series nationwide, exposing mainstream Americans to some of the furthest reaches of musical modern and forms thought. "Pieces are commissioned, premiered and never heard of again," Bronstein said in an interview with The Sacramento Union. "We want to make sure this doesn't happen. We're not only very involved in commissioning pieces, but in resurrecting works that haven't been played." Founded in 1984 when all three musicians were graduate students at the State University of New York, Stony Brook, Aequalis is a w performing ensemble, full-tim- e concertizing from Maine to California. Their special mission, they agree, is bringing new music to those audiences that might never be exposed to it, keeping such music alive, circulating and growing. "We were all very interested in new music, very committed to it, but we weren't happy with the way it normally gets done," said Mohr. Largely performed by short-terfreelance ensembles, "the music never really gets the time that we feel it should." Adds Bronstein, "I don't like to see people differentiate between regular classical music and new music. New American music is really the logical extension of what's come before it. It can be romantic, classical and lyrical. . 11 m i. . a I'jtffiirWii'iiiBi of BYU Photo-courte- Aequalis, a unique ensemble including cellist Elizabeth Mohr, percussionist Michael Parola and pianist Fred Bronstein, will perform new American music at BYU Oct. 5. g!!i!IJJW.!AhlAyraJ!Jaf Best sellers i IMS l Mandrell 3., "Wealth Charles Givens FICTION I.
