Show Page THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, C2 Friday, Aug. 10, 1990 American Place Theater talent Ursula Brodauf Craig exhibit Aug. 19, Springville Museum An exhibit of sculpture by Ursula Brodauf Craig will open at the Springville Museum of Art on Sunday, Aug. 19 and remain until Sept. 30. The art work will be shown in the West Clyde Gallery and the Westway of the Museum's second floor. Each sculpted art piece has omitted unnecessary details, leaving a form that is pure like a haiku poem. Brodauf Craig's earlier lifelike figures reflect sensitive awareness to the spirit of life, the human condition. The recent forms are abstract and offer a quiet repose for the intellect. Throughout her work there is a g of oppo-site- s sense of duality, combined to form a wholeness. The soft embraces the hard, the bold enhances the simple. Not only do these opposites complement each other, but they unite to form a wholeness that is sublime. - : Ursula Brodauf Craig was born in Gruenhainichen, Germany, a small town near the Chechoslovakian border reknown for its woodcarvers. She apprenticed under master iwoodcarver Emil Helbig and obtained a scholarship to the art academy of her choice. It was not yin-yan- until after the end of World War II, however, that the artist could embark upon her studies. She entered the Master School of Art in West Berlin in 1947. During the Third Reich, all art forms, with the exception of realism, had been banned as decadent. The West Berlin School was the first of its kind in Germany to foster expressionism after the war and that resurging artistic freedom provided a setting for the artist's creative development. Brodauf Craig studied with sculptors Klakow, Seitz, Sintenig and Van Verkerk, some of the famous members of the Bauhaus School. After five years under their tutelage, she obtained a masters Degree from the Master School of Arts. Brodauf Craig immigrated to the United States in 1955. She has since continued her work as a sculptor and expanded her artistic interests to include photography. An opening reception will be held on the Nuseum's second floor Sunday, Aug. 19 from 5 p.m. the public is invited. KIDS UNDER 12 FREE Stand Before You Naked," opens in November.
