Canadian Sports Minister Marcel Danis reversed the ruling of his predecessor, Jean Charest, who in 1988 placed Johnson under a lifetime ban from competing for the national team. Minutes later, the president of Athletics Canada said Johnson will be reinstated to a national team after his two-yesuspension by track and field's international governing body expires September 24 if the sprinter can meet team of g, '. . flat-bell- . million. Douglas, who beat Tyson in Tokyo on Feb. 11, will make $25 million from boxing and $1 million from endorsements. Nicklaus and Palmer head the outside income list, each at $8 million. The magazine estimates Nicklaus will earn $600,000 from golf this year and Palmer $100,000. Norman is expected to make $7 from endorsements while Jordan and Becker are at $6 million each. Though Johnson will be able to compete again, he and any other Canadian athlete caught using performance-enhancing drugs face lifetime bans on receiving direct federal funds. In making his announcement, Danis warned that athletes caught using banned drugs in the future will face even stiffer penalties. He proposed that the suspension for a first-tim- e offense be doubled, from two years to four. "We accept the notion ... that rules ought not put the federal government in the position y of deciding matters relating to the eligibility of individual athletes, coaches, trainers and others," the sports minister said. Johnson was stripped of his gold medal and world record for the dash at the Seoul Olympics after testing positive for steroids. "I'm just very happy that the government gave me the OK to run for this country again," Johnson said in the driveway at his family home in east suburban Toronto. "I want to thank the Canadian public who supported me. This is one of the happiest days of my life, so far. I am very, very happy that I can run for this country again. When the University of Arizona linebacker was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia 13 months ago, perspectives altered dramatically, from that of a seemingly invincible football player to thinking about just staying alive. After treatment including extensive chemotherapy, the Singleton underwent a bone marrow transplant in January from identical twin brother Chris. For the past several months he has been getting his life back in order. And Wednesday, he received medical clearance to play football again as well as NCAA permission for a sixth season of eligibility. "It's been a year since I've been playing; basically I'm nervous," he said. Singleton credited tremendous support, including strangers nationwide in addition to well-wishi- the backing of family and friends, for making him "fight to be where I am right now." "It meant a great deal. It meant that people were caring and thinking about me far away who don't even know me," he said. "It shows what this world is built on." ing me up and I think that's been my main support for the last four-fiv- e months that I've been training." His physician, Dr. William Dal-tohead of the bone marrow transplant program at the university s Arizona Cancer Center, said a thorough medical evaluation of Singleton has shown "no evidence whatsoever that there is any leukemia." Singleton's bone marrow function "has normalized," Dalton said; any bleeding problem has been ruled out. "We are obviously very concerned but find no evidence whatsoever that he would be at increased risk playing football," he added. But he said that statistically, it will take four to five years to be able to declare Singleton cured. n, racing; golf-golice-ic- e s; hockey; r; The NCAA eligibility staff, on behalf of the NCAA Eligibility Committee, granted Singleton's petition for an extension to play another season because of illness.
