Show National Friday, October 20, 1989 The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah A, Emotional aftershocks are just beginning for Bay area quake victims Briefs Four jets flew through shear - federal earth DENVER (AP) A report says four United Airlines jets flew through a dangerous wind shear at Stapleton International Airport last year when pilots either did not hear or misunderstood a control tower warning. The report released Thursday by the General Accounting Office said one jet canceled its approach, but four others went through and eventually landed safely. "Four commercial airline pilots from one airline flew into micro-buractivity, despite prior warning by the controllers and explicit airline policy to avoid microburst alert areas," the report said. "The crews either did not hear clearly or did not know the meaning of the term 'microburst alert.'" A microburst is produced when a downdraft of heavy air hits the st SAN FRANCISCO and causes winds to spread horizontally along the ground. A plane going through one experiences a head wind, then a down-draf- t, and finally a tailwind, which can cause a crash. The Stapleton microburst pushed winds in opposite directions at 92 miles an hour, officials said. "They were lucky," said James Evans, a researcher with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who has helped conduct tests on the radar detecting the wind shifts. None of the four pilots who landed during the incident could remember getting the alert, said Bob Ireland, who was staff engineer with United's flight training center in Denver at the time. "They flat didn't remember it. ... It was no wonder they didn't hear it. That's a very, very busy time for pilots," he said. w the newspaper reported. The couples were believed to be n following the religion's r, of preaching practice Guadalaworking in an upper-clas- s jara neighborhood, before they disappeared, the newspaper said. They apparently "went to the wrong house," the newspaper quoted a source as saying. "They were suspected of being DEA agents." Federal investigators believed the couples were buried in the same Guadalajara park where Camarena initially was buried, the report said. Camarena disappeared in February 1985; his body and that of his pilot were found a month later buried on a ranch outside Guadalajara. The bodies of the missionaries have not been found. well-know- Plans for Krueger doll halted better that it NEW YORK (AP) Many people hoping to buy the Freddy Krueger doll, based on the ghoulish character in "Nightmare on Elm Street" movies, may be able to purchase it only in their dreams. The Rev. Donald Wildmon, whose American Family Association had urged a boycott of the doll, announced Thursday that the Matchbox toy company informed him it would not proceed with plans to market the doll. "We feel that the decision by Matchbox is a very positive and socially responsible one, and we commend them for their decision," Wildmon said in disclosing the toy company's action. known for tiny Matchbox, decided toy cars, confirmed to drop its plans at least temporfor marketing a doll verarily sion of the movie fiend who has blades for fingernails and kills his victims in their dreams. "Matchbox will not advertise or promote the doll in any way," said a spokeswoman for Matchbox Toys (USA) Ltd. The doll, announced last month, had been expected to be a hot seller ahead of Halloween. But Matchbox has not decided on the doll's ultimate fate. "As far as 1990 goes, I dan't think any decision has been made," said the spokeswoman .e ry Three helicopters transported quake haven't let up, and authorities say the psychological shock-wavare just beginning. '"We are getting people who are starting to call in now with some of the things we expected to have follow this earthquake," Eve Myer, executive director of the San Francisco Suicide Prevention Hotline, said Thursday. "We're seeing the depression that sets in after the adrenalin dies down and when the television stories (about the quake) start to repeat themselves." The usual load of 200 calls a day is up at least 10 percent since the quake, Myer said. The "first wave" of callers, generally elderly people who felt particularly vulnerable, is giving way to a second group that seems exceptionally confused by overpowering feelings of sadness and gloom, she said. Many callers are reporting trouble sleeping, sensing the incredible fright caused by the temblor all over again, and they appear to be linking the earthquake to other traumatic events in their lives and intensifying their discomfort, she said. Myer said she understands how they feel. When she couldn't find her husband immediately after Tuesday's earthquake, she felt tension and frustration. "It forces you to confront your own mortality: that you don t live iorever, that bad things happen to; sometimes for no good people reason at all," Weiss said Thurs day. Shuttle astronauts plunge into heavy schedule SPACE CENTER, Houston (AP) Atlantis' five astronauts plunged into a heavy schedule of medical, scientific and photographic experiments today after being awakened by three rousing college fight songs. "We've got a full day planned for you," Mission Control told the astronauts, and even before they had breakfast, they were asked to take pictures of Gibralter in the Mediterranean for a film being made about Earth's environment. The wakeup songs were from colleges attended by the three mission specialists on board, "Boomer Sooners," "UConn Huskies" and "Victory March." Shannon Lucid attended the University of Oklahoma, Franklin Chang-Dia- z the University of Connecticut and Ellen Baker the State University of New York at Buffalo. The flight plan today called for the crew to continue experiments that measure Earth's damaged ozone layer and study the effects of weightlessness on the human body, the processing of polymers and the growth of corn and ice crystals. Once it reaches Jupiter, Galileo is expected to give the best look yet of another planet and find clues to the universe's origin. Galileo was pronounced in "perfect shape" and "right on course" Thursday by NASA, and Atlantis also was given a clean bill of health after the crew members restored a cooling system that shut down the previous day when it overheated. mm ILZ3 BUNKBEDS, MATTRESSES, DAYBEDS MATTRESS FACTORY LA. high rise blaze doused - LOS ANGELES (AP) A fire broke out on the top floor of a office building early today, but it was quickly doused after firefighters were airlifted to the roof.
