Hillcrest again rebounded 38-ya- rd By DON BEU Herald Correspondent There were no suprises at the sixth annual running of the Utah County Invitational Cross Country meet as Dave Spence of Timpview and Becky Bybee of Mountain View walked er, ran away with the enior boys and girls titles respectively. "I was worried about the 4A schools, Cedar City, Mountain View..." said Spence, who won his race with a blazing 15 minute, 35 second finish. A tight pack of runners from Mountain View, Cedar City and Judge Memorial were hot on Spence's heels as he rounded the first three turns of the two-lathree mile course. "I stretched it out on the downhills," said Spence, who opened up a good 10 yard lead on the pack on the first downhill stretch of the course. "I didn't know how far ahead I was," said Spence, "But I could hear them calling out my teammate's name (Brandon Rhpads, 2nd in 15:47) so I Junior-S- p, wasn't worried." "I expected a battle all the way," said Bybee after winning the girls' race in 18:17. "I expected Kristie Brown (of Provo) to be here." Brown sat out the race with a foot injury. Without Brown, who nipped re Bybee at the tape at last year's Invitational, Bybee's strategy was to beat the time of Lynette Peterson of Bingham, who the Freshman-Sophomor- e race in 18:29. Bybee and Mountain View coach Dave Houle expect stiff competition from Peterson in Region 2 this fall. "I wasn't sure at first how far ahead I was," said Bybee. "Everyone was telling me I was 7 feet ahead, then 30 yards. It was confusing." But Bybee soon had a commanding lead over everyone except Orem's Julie Sorensen, who finished second with a time of 18:40. Sorensen and Bybee pulled away from the pack early in the race. In third Timpview's place was at Mary Gribble 19:32. There were no team scores for the meet. "That was one of the keys to the game when we held them there and forced them into that field goal attempt," Park said. It was truly a matter of forcing the kick attempt since the Huskies gained just 15 yards in seven plays after recovering the onsides kick. Thereafter, it became a matter of trying to get enough yardage for one first down, thus eating up the remaining time. The Bruins didn't quite accomplish that, but the Huskies weren't able to capitalize on their final opportunity from In between, despite some stellar play from the Bruin defense, Hillcrest picked up a field goal, a safety and a touchdown to keep things interesting. Mountain View looked strong on its first offensive series, moving from its own 11 to the Husky 33 before bogging down. The Bruins actually scored on that series when Albrecht passed about 50 yards to Matt Hawkins after a beautiful fake into the line. v,t- .'. - - That fake was so good, in fact, that one official blew the play dead before it had completely unfolded.
