Mich When race cars start hithng concrete walls or spinning out at 200 mph. people want to know why. Two accidents Saturday at Michigan International Speedway raised questions about a possible tire problem and eventually to the unprecedented postponement of the Michigan 500 Indy-ca- r race until next Sunday. e The race, which had been scheduled Sunday. July 21. was put in jeopardy alter Colombian driver Roberto Guerrero spun and record-settinBobby Rahal slammed into the wall during a practice session Saturday. John Frasco. chairman of the sancboard of CART, the Indy-ca- r tioning body, said, "two right-fron- t tires lost air pressure due to undetermined causes. Goodyear engineers said they needed sufficient time for a more thorough analysis to determine the causes." high-spee- d 500-mil- g pole-winn- new-radia- I ve done enough testing on the new tires to have absolute confidence in what was provided tor this year ... I never had the slightest inkling of any problem. But we must fully analyze what really happened in the laboratory and you can t do that in just one or two days I think we have to start all over and be absolutely sure this is not a problem with a faulty design." Goodyear began the switch to radial race tires in the Indy-ca- r series in the middle ot 1984. but did not use the new tires in an oval race until the Miller American 200 at Milwaukee on June 2. There were no tire problems reported in e the event on Milwaukee's flat oval. This was to be the first d race test of the radials on a l y - ( one-mil- high-banke- track. Mike 3EX?CKjti.' We go urv lust and we don t like to go The annoum einent of the postponement, the lirst such incident in Indy-ca- r history, was made jointly about tour hours alter Rahal s accident by oltwials of CART, the speedway snd Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.. which is the exclusive supplier of tires tor the CART-PPIndy-ca- r series At the same time. Goodyear announced it would withdraw its race tires, which were being e f used on this fast d. track for the first ti.' e. and bring back the type of Lias-pltires used here in two Indy-ca- r races in 1984. "There was no choice on either side.'said Mario Andretti. the del ending Michigan 500 champion and one of the fastest qualifiers lor the fifth annual event, "it the two accidents could have been absolute pure coincidence. It could have been debris on the track. It doesn't take much to puncture one of these tires. ' Right now we have a problem Babich. assistant director fjj.y,aJifl raung for Good'.ear, said .No indication was found previous! that we had been close to any kind problem All our previous testing in running here, and in practice the laM two days, there was no indication of temperatures problems And we examined the tires. On Guerrero s. we thought we could probably detect a puncture. On Rahal s. we could not find any indication the tire was damaged So, w ith the concern on the part of the drivers, and our own concern, we felt it best to take the action that has been taken. We have no indication at this time that there is any deficiency in the of tires." Rahal. who only one day earlier had earned a niche in the record book with a qualifying lap of 215.202 mph the fastest official lap in the history of the sport found himself alter the crash wondering where he would start the race, if indeed he winds up running it at all. The driver from Dublin. Ohio. had crashed his primary car in practice on Friday . jumping into his spare car for Die record qualifying run That spare was the one he crashed Saturday, leaving his team with the option of repairing one of the two mangled racers or withdrawing entirely However, it was expected that he would wind up starling the original the less damaged of the two car from the rear of the pack, with t Rick Mears. the 2U.72U at mph. moving qualilier second-fastes- up into the pole position. Rahal felt the right decision was made in postponing the race, "Much as I would have liked to race Sunday t. I think there were too many unknowns. "Whether it had happened to me or not. I would agree." Rahal added. "The attitude shown is to let discretion be the better part of valor." Everyone concerned, including the drivers, met to discuss options before the final decisions were made. The (tew chid Rahal said. were very strong in their lee ling that if we ddn t know we shouldn t put the cars bak on the trar k I don t think the ownen wanted to, either Everybody was concerned with safety first " Goodyear will truck in all of the old bias-plrace tires stored in its racing warehouses in Indianapolis and and Cleveland about 200 will also build an estimated 700 to 800 this week. Veterans are due to report on Friday. There is an impressive list of players who, at this point, are planning to stay away from camp hoping to get contracts or just to get pacts signed. In addition, the club's No. 1 draft d William "The choice, Refrigerator'' Perry is still in the deep freeze as far as progress on his first NFL contract. Perry isn't alone. Mike Single-tarthe NFC defensive player of the year who is considered the anchor on the NFL's best defense, o is expected to holdout. Bears' general manager Jerry y, All-Pr- All-Pr- Vainisi has remained adamant about sticking to the Bears' policy of not renegotiating contracts. "We're hoping that after some thought, they will report." Vainisi said. "We aren't going to do anything to make them come back because they signed contracts in " good faith. Vainisi remains optimistic that talks will lead to signings and an end to any more holdouts. While labor discussions overshadow the open of the camp, there is a feeling of euphoria still left over from the 1384 season that saw the Bears advance to the NFC finals before losing to eventual Super bowl champ San Francisco. Coach Mike Ditka has superstar running back Walter Payton back in tow and a presumably healthy Jim McMahon back at quarterback. McMahor. missed the final two months of the season with a lacerated kidney but reports he is healthy. 'I'm ready to play just like 1 have always done," McMahon said. "You can't be worried about past injuries because if you do, you risk more of a chance of injury." McMahon is the No. 1 quarterback with Steve Fuller, who replaced McMahon in the playoffs, back as the top reserve. The Bears also welcome back receiver Ken Margerum, who missed the entire 1984 season due to an injury. The Bears will spend 28 days at Platteville, 11 more than last year.
