Show Wednesday. July 24. Utah-Region- al LJ In Being Mormon Converts De-spi- its reputation for aggressive, successful missionary work, the Mormon Church had run into a stone wall in Israel long before Orthodox Jews took to the streets to protest the church's plans to build an academic center in Jerusalem. Of the approximately 30,000 d Mormon missionaries combing the world for converts, none is in Israel. And in the 16 years that the church's Brigham Young University has operated a study program in Jerusalem, not one Jew in Israel has embraced the faith. Israeli law bans active proselytizing by any faith, and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-daSaints say they have scrupulously obeyed that law while operating the Jerusalem program. But by the same token, Israelis have not shown a tremendous interest in seeking out Mormons, say church members who have lived in dark-suite- y Israel. "To many of them, we're just another Christian sect," said Benjamin Urrutia, a Mormon who served in the Israeli army from 1975 to 1977. "Not once was there a baptism. They were not proselytized, they were not trying to baptize anybody. Those who say they are (now) are completely off the wall." John Tvedtness also witnessed no conversions during the eight years he taught in the Jerusalem program, although a few Jews had shown a strong interest in the church. The Israelis' relative lack of interest contrasts sharply with nations such as Ghana and Nigeria, where thousands have become Mormons without the presence of missionaries. Rabbi Eric Silver, of the Congregation Kol Ami in Salt Lake City, said Jews' abhorrence of conversion is hardly confined to Mormon- - ism. It stems, he said, from a deep loyalty to the past. "You're betraying your ancestors, who died some pretty horrible deaths rather than sacritice their Jewishness. For you to take that heritage and say it means nothing. hot's nnt whv rnur i n'oi." t rtrc their lives," he said. Silver accepts the Mormons' pledge to abstain from missionary work in Israel. "I think when the church leaders say they will not proselyte, I think they are people who will keep their word. I believe the Mormons' friendship with the Jews is sincere, it is honest, it is greatly appreciated." Tvedtness said most Mormons, who attract about 200,000 new followers annually, really don't expect Jewish conversions, although they would welcome them. Scriptural prophecies, he said, indicate that Jews won't accept Christianity until the Second Coming of Christ. "Most Mormons feel they won't accept it until they see the wounds in Christ's feet and hands, as written in Zechariah." Tvedtness said. Tvedtness and Urrutia both said Israelis tend to like Mormons, partly because of their enthusiastic and doctrinally inspired support of the Jews' return to the Holy Land. But neither was surprised last week when the BYU center, under construction near the Mount of Olives, became the focus of emotional protests by Orthodox Jews who fear missionary-minde- Mor- d mons were out to convert brethren. "I can't believe what people think. Their imaginations are so creative, they think you walk into the studio and it's a mattress," said Cindy Brimhall. "The things they think I did for Playboy are a lot more interesting than the truth." "The truth is I was born and raised here, and I just got bored," she said. Miss Brimhall said she is anxious to hear her former classmates' reactions when her five-yea- r Roy High School reunion takes place in 1987. The reaction from her family has been mixed. Her mother and four older siblings supported the career move but her father did not, she said. In her teens, the slender, freckled redhead aspired to be a model, but said she became discourged by politics in Utah's modeling business. "I was in high school to get my grades and get out. I wanted to model since I was 13, but you learn pretty early that's a joke in Utah," she said. "They work a lot of short blondes here and I'm not that." A friend in Los Angeles, who had wall-to-wa- ll Jews flocked to the Wailing Wall last week to protest the center. And the Knesset, or Israeli parliament, is reviewing the permit that allowed construction to begin on the $15 million project. Wallace's schedule Monday included numerous exams and tests, including blood tests and a magnetic resonance imaging test which allows doctors to examine his spine said area without using Wallace's press secretary Billy Joe Camp. Wallace also met the man who will perform the surgery. Dr. Robert Edgar of Denver. Wallace, 65, is to undergo the four-hou- r Dorsal Route Entry Zone operation Wednesday at Craig. In 1840, Smith went so far as to send Mormon apostle Orson Hyde, a Jewish convert, to preach Mormonism to Jews in Europe and Jerusalem, and to dedicate Palestine for the return of the Jews. Although there is no record of Jewish conversions, Hyde later wrote Smith that he was welcomed by many Jews, and found them particularly eager to talk about Palestine. mxxsssii Don't miss this very special sale on oak entertainment centers.
