Show Friday. July Diary Entries Portray b Unrepentant Mengele MUNICH, West Germany AKt Passages from the diaries of Nazi death camp doctor Josef Mengele indicate he was terrified of being captured and tormented by sleeplessness but devoted to the end to Nazism. The diary excerpts appeared Wednesday in the fifth installment of Mengele's life story published the magazine Bunte. by mass-circulatio- n weekly The series is based on family documents supplied by Mengele's son, Rolf Mengele. Bunte provided The Associated Press with a copy of the article a day in advance of the magazine's publishing date today. The article interspersed commentary with excerpts from Josef Mengele s diary before Rolf Mengele went to see his father in the hiding in Brazil in May 1977 last meeting between the two men. Two years later, the elder Mengele apparently drowned on Brazil's Atlantic coast. His death was not revealed until last month, when documents seized in the home of a Mengele family friend in West Germany steered investigators to a grave in southern Brazil where the Nazi fugitive's remains were found. Mengele has been blamed for the of 400,000 prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp in d Poland during World War II. He eluded pursuers after the war ended and lived secretly in South America, most of the time in Brazil, from 1949 until his death. The diary excerpts portrayed a bitter fugitive in constant fear of apprehension, plagued by nightmares and sleeplessness, and defiant about Germany's murderous Nazi period. "Instead of refreshing sleep I am deaths i Eichmann. as head of the Nazi Gestapo police's Jewish section, orchestrated the maltreatment, deportation to concentration camps and murder of millions of Jews. There was no comment from Israel on Eisenberg's report. Mengele was responsible for the deaths of 400,000 people, mostly Jews, at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. Known as the "Angel of Death," he conducted gruesome genetic experiments on dwarfs and twins to create an Aryan master race of blue-eye- d blondes for Adolf Hitler. Last month, the skeleton of a man who drowned in 1979 in the Atlantic Ocean off the Brazilian coast was unearthed in a cemetery at Embu, near Sao Paulo, Brazil. An international team of experts concluded the "skeleton is that of Josef Mengele within a reasonable scientific certainty." Menachem Russak, who heads the Israeli police's Nazi war criminals unit and participated in the skeleton investigation, has said he accepts its results. But the Justice Ministry has said it has not yet closed its books on the case. Eisenberg wrote that Isser Har-e- l, former head of the Israeli intelligence service, is not convinced the skeleton was that of Mengele. Eisenberg said a group financed privately by Americans discovered Mengele was still alive six months ago. By observing Mengele's family in West Germany and tapping phone lines, the group learned of a plan to give Mengele a new identity to help him elude a stepped-u- p hunt for him. The 40th anniversary this year of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp fueled the hunt for Mengele. Rewards of more than $3 million were offered for information leading to his capture. "I know that the Mossad (Israeli intelligence) possesses documents on how the Mengele family supported by their South American friends is attempting to hoodwink the world in the Mengele case," Eisenberg wrote. Eisenberg said diaries made available to Bunte magazine by Mengele's son Rolf were part of the plot. boinf Vary ) MUNICH, West Germany (UPI) Israel does not believe the bones exhumed from a Brazilian grave were those of Josef Mengele and will continue its hunt for the Nazi "Angel of Death," a West German magazine reported.
