Sandberg also noted artist John Hafen, one of Utah's great creative painters and foremost landscape artists. Born in Switzerland, Hafen came to Utah County at age six. "Hafen put art on the basis of religion in importance. He said Birdie .... we should be eager for its companionship. "The fruits of his great convictions and foresight in art are felt in this area and indeed the whole state of Utah." Sandberg next explained simple concepts of artistic expression, saying unity, balance, repitition, movement, contrast, emphasis and variety influence art. Com- bined with line, shape, texture, value and color, a mood is created. AU of this adds up to harmony. Sandberg studies art at Kansas City Art Institute, Brigham Young University and University of Utah. She has spent four years at the Springville Art Museum where she has developed many new programs. Although Riverside Ladies host a yearly arts and crafts event, this was the first time they paid tribute exclusively to the fine art contributions of group members. Paintings and sculpture were on display at Riverside Country ' holders. Phil Shartleff Photos Regular 14.95 Club. Birdie Boorman introduced the speaker and acted as program director. Riverside Ladies president Ellen Allen presented roses to the newly elected president Beth Evans, and to past and new club officers. Ann Landers I was 23, living with a divorced man, 29. We got along fine. The only thing I didn't like about him was the hatred he expressed toward his mother and sisters. (He hasn't spoken to them in five years.) After awhile he began to get pretty rough during our His "nibbling" turned love-makin- g. into biting and his caresses turned into such hard squeezes that he was crushing me. Then he started to pinch me and pull my hair out When I announced that I didn't care for such rough handling he said I was missing out on the best part of sex. The next night when he wanted to make love I told him I didn't feel like it. He said, "Well, that's tough, because I DO." Although he wouldn't admit it, he raped me. The following morning I was such a nervous wreck I couldn't go to work. I moved out of the apartment and into my cousin's place. When he called me at my office a few days later I told him Woman-Hate- I never wanted to see him again. I am in therapy now trying to rid myself of the anger, humiliation and hurt. The moral of the story is this: When a man despises his mother and his sisters it's a good idea to stay away Michifrom him. I wish I had. gan Woman Dear Woman: Congratulations for moving out after the first rotten experience. Too many women give these monsters second, third and fourth chances only to get beat up again. You're right about men who hate their mothers and sisters. Chances are they hate all women. Dear Ann Landers: Please address this problem in your column and ask people to stop smoking at gas stations. Almost every day I see someone walking around gas pumps with a cigarette. This is frightening since it puts everyone in the 3 VISITS ,C1 fn 5 pnoyyyyyyy oooononoon $0500 j ..... A Very Concerned Citizen Dear Citizen: Thank you for reminding us of something that could be a matter of life and death. I checked with Michael Pinto, fire marshal from the National Safety Council, and he said, "They don't put the 'No Smoking' signs up without reason.
