She said she couldn't afford to live in a better building. You advised her to move. Several years ago I had the same problem. I lived in an old building. It was bad enough just listening to the pipes clank when someone in another apartment turned on the water, but the worst problem was noisy neighbors. The man next door slept all day and played the drums all night. When I complained to the landlord he said, "Everybody has a right to his own lifestyle." Finally I called the police. That for a few stopped the drummer minutes. He started up again a half hour after the police left. When you don't have much money it's hard to move. I don't mean it's hard to move to a better place it's hard to move to another dump because even the crummy buildings demand a seAnn curity deposit plus the first month's rent. Finally, I scraped together the money to move. It was quiet for a few days. Then someone moved in downstairs under my apartment. My new neighbors were fond of playing loud music at all hours of 2 a.m., 3 a.m., 4 a.m. the night I complained. It did no good. I didn't have the money to move again, but finally I did move into a mental hospital with a nervous breakdown. You'll probably say the noise didn't give me the nervous breakdown, there must have been a lot of other problems, and you're right. But noise, excessive noise, con- sistently assaulting your drums can bring a half-sic- k son to the breaking point. Mon-Fr- i 1 0-- Sat. 1 0-- 6 Ann Landers Dear Ann: My wife and I were invited to a 60th wedding anniversary. The guests were asked to come between 2 and 5 p.m. The flowers were lovely and the food was marvelous. One could see that a great deal of effort and love (as well as money) went into the plans. Every guest who came through the door had his picture taken for the couple's scrapbook. The three hours went by rapidly and everyone had a grand time. Promptly at 5:00 the door bell rang and the hostess greeted a couple we all knew. My mouth fell open when I saw the man shirt, no wearing a tie, printed pants and a pair of sandals. He looked as if he had been working in the yard and his wife said, "I forgot to tell you that we have to go to a 60th wedding anniversary party! Come on!" So he jumped in the car and came the way he was. The host and hostess were embarrassed and I believe relieved this couple didn't show up while a large number of guests were there. Why would Bewildered In people do this? Detroit short-sleeve- d Dear B in D: I don't have the foggiest notion. Perhaps your version is right on. Or maybe they didn't realize the affair was going to be so elegant. No excuse is good enough, however. The appearance was an Insult to the honored couple.
