After boot camp in San Diego and specialized job training, Prue, who is a qualified enlisted surface warfare specialist, served in several assignments, including duty aboard six ships. He reported aboard the San Bernardino for the second time in July 1983. The San Bernardino's relatively new design is a complete departure from the bow doors on older tank landing ships.
