Show 1 - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, . ge 22 20, 1984 Friday, July Number of Unmarried Pairs Living Togefher Rises - WASHINGTON Arlene Saluter, author of the bureau report on marital status and living arrangements, said the trend has "slowed down some, but it's hard (to predict changes in these short-tercomparisons." The Census Bureau did not ask questions "regarding the nature of the personal relationship in these living arrangements" and warned the data may include a such as a variety of situations young adult renting from an older person or a couple sharing a home in a platonic relationship. But it said partners in six of 10 unmarried households were under 35 years of age and in 76 percent of households, they had never been married or were divorced. "Another striking change in the living arrangements of young adults has been the increase in the number who still live at home with their parents," the report said. This increased by 85 percent between 1970 and 1983. "I assume it's probably due to an increase in the cost of living," Mrs. Saluter said. Men and women are marrying The (UPI) number of unmarried couples liv- ing together has more than tripled since 1970, but more young adults also are opting to live with their parents, the Census Bureau reports. o Less than half the nation's 45 percent were married and living in their own homes in 1983, compared with 56 percent in 1970, the Census Bureau said this week. "This decline is to some extent a reflection of the increasing tendency for young adults to delay marriage and the increase in divorce," the agency said in a study. The number of 25- - to living alone or with quadrupled between 1970 and 1983, it said. The bureau said there were 1.89 million unmarried households in 1983, more than three times the number in 1970. 18-t- The number of unmarried households zoomed during the 1970s, but the rate of increase slowed in the early 1980s, the bureau said. are younger and half are older. later, but the trend is more pronounced for women.
