Summary By United Press International By United Press International By United 93 Very moist air has become entrenched over the state this morning and another day of active thunderstorm activity is in store. The southerly flow aloft has continued to pump tropical moisture into Utah from Arizona. Patchy areas of clouds were found around the area at sunrise and isolated showers or thundershowers are in progress. Most of the showers are confined to the north. Rain showers were observed around Price and the south end of the Salt Lake Valley during the early morning hours. Radar also indicated some shower activity in the central portion of the state during the night. Once again conditions will be favorable for locally heavy showers with the more active thunderstorms forming during the mid and late afternoon, continuing into the night. This scenario is likely to be repeated each day during the weekend and possibly into the Pioneer Day holiday Tuesday. The next four or five days will be marred by the threat of locally heavy showers and potential flash flood situations. The National Weather Service suggests those who plan to travel in the back country during the next several days be alert for rapidly deteriorating weather conditions and avoid hiking or camping in flash flood prone areas such as narrow steep walled canyons, washes and near restricted stream beds. Temperatures this morning at dawn were warm and muggy. Clouds have held the mercury in the 60s to mid 70s. The lowest thus far has been Cedar City with 61 while Salt Lake and Green River remained at 75. Showers and thunderstorms Thursday soaked the Southeast, washing away a Saharan dust cloud that shrouded Miami for two days. Two towboats collided on the Mississippi River and two crewmen were missing. Twenty low temperature records from Michigan to Texas were tied or broken as readings dipped into the 60s as far south as Alabama. Two towboats collided in thick fog on the Mississippi River near Thebes, 111. The Hellen Tully capsized after colliding with the towboat Maba Kelce, said Coast Guard Cmdr. Tom Robinson at the Paducah, Ky., office. The Hellen Tully reportedly ran aground before rolling over and sinking about 90 minutes after the accident. "We have reports there were two people on the Tully and we have no bodies or survivors," Robinson said. "We are frantically trying to get divers aboard." Showers in the Southeast washed away a dust cloud that originated in Africa's Sahara Desert, was borne to Florida on a tropical weather system and enveloped Miami for two days. "The few showers around sunrise this morning evidently dissipated the African dust," said Burt Sylvern of the National Hurricane Center. "I think there'll be a gradual improvement through tomorrow and the weekend." The huge cloud of dust spread from Vero Beach in Indian River County to Naples on the West Coast, south the the Florida Keys and beyond, where it blanketed Cuba and Hispanola. Low temperature records were broken or 78 52 94 Dick Oveson to the Airport Board; Shirley Paxman, Library Board; James d'Ark, Media Re- view Commission; Matt Moody, d Media Review Commission; John Stube, Media Review Commission;. In other action Tuesday, the council agreed to sign a resolution calling for the local housing authority to be able to keep additional income it generates rather than turning those excess funds over to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The council also adopted an ordinance establishing the wage classification schedule for city employees to reflect the two and one-hapercent increase given employees in the newly-passe- d budget.
