Provo, Utah, Thursday, May 24, 1984 Dognappers Steal Rockefeller Gives $10,000 to School Blind Man's 'Eyes' For Navaios in Southeastern Utah READING, England (UPI) -The stolen item, police said, is "fully trained, about 30 inches tall at the shoulder, with a black and tan colored coat and a fluffy appearance." It answers to the name Karl and is worth more than $4,000. If police find Karl, a German shephard, it will make a blind piano tuner very happy. Karl had just completed a basic training course in guiding the blind when thieves in Reading, west of London, snatched him from a van belonging to the Guide Dog Training Center in nearby Wokingham. "I've never heard of a guide dog being stolen before. It's a very mean thing to do," a police spokesman said. Karl, who weighs about 100 pounds, had just completed special training to serve a blind piano tuner whose present guide dog had "retired" because of old age, said Brian Moody of the Guide Dog Center. "We've told his (the piano tuner's) family, but we haven't told him yet. His whole livelihood depends on it. Obviously, he needs to be able to move around," Moody said. "It's going to take weeks, if not months, to find a replacement," he said. Police said Karl, who had been intensively trained for the better part of a year, was worth between $4,000 and $7,000. "I guess the question it raises in my mind is whether the public school system should be or whether it should reflect the strong cultural experiences of a particular school's students," Rockefeller said. "My conclusion," he added, "is that it would be a great shame for schooling to be a leveler. It should be an enhancer of the students' innate qualities." Before the award was presented Monday, the pupils entertained Rockefeller with break dances and Indian dances. The 4? year-ol- d n of industrialist John D. The only restriction on the award is that it must be used to further the arts in the schools. Tti money can spent all at once or invested and the proceeds used each year. "We'd like our award to last forever," said Montezuma Creek Principal Mark Peterson. "We will place the money in an account to allow us to use the interest annually to continue to bring professional artists to the school." "I was pleased to see so much dance, and had not been aware it is such a strong art here," Rockefeller said. "Dance is the most natural of all the arts and surprisingly, in many places, is among those taught the least." Rockefeller said selecting Montezuma Creek for the award was not difficult. ' The school's quality was recognized very quickly. What is so special about Montezuma Creek is not where it is (in scenic, remote southeastern Utah); but the fact that at an elementary level the arts are given such equal credit," he said. Each year the school hosts numerous artists and performers Fabrics Finds t Cool-Budge- CENTER. Montezuma Creek Elementary School was one of eight selected from 238 applicants for the prizes awarded by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. The award was started in 1981, to promote arts in public education. "It is rare to find an elementary school which places such importance on the arts, including the art of living, the most important art of all," Rockefeller said.
