The meeting will be Monday at 8:30 a.m. at Nebo laming Center, 570 & Main St., Springville. "I felt the resolution w - dent Carl Nielson said the meeting is mainly to discuss what the mascot will look like. "There were some concerns that the guidelines were too narrow," he said. A resolution with new guidelines for Springville High School's mascot was approved at Tuesday's Nebo district board meeting. The resolution, unanimously accepted by the board, states that a committee will be established to " form a new, pictorial representation of the mascot and to adopt other usage guidelines, standards and procedures. Specifically, the resolution stated the mascot will not be no a devil-lik- e personage tail, horns or trident, and the term devil(s) by itself shall not be used in any written form or with any school cheers or songs. Residents are having mixed thoughts on the mascot redesign, with some say: ing the guidelines are too much and others saying the guidelines are fine and appreciated. "I think they are too narrow," said Cathie Erickson of Springville. "If we voted to keep the mascot of the devil, we should be able to have a devil. I think those people who are having a hard time they keeping the mascot could go to a different school with a mascot they like." She said there are some things she can understand being toned down, like a sign above the wrestling room saying "Welcome to Hell," but overall the board shouldn't even have a meeting to redesign the mascot. Nielson said the board agreed to keep the Red Devil, but members feel the guidelines concerning the redesign need to be revisited. "I think their resolution sounds good," said resident Belinda Adams. "It still satisfies the history of the mascot while displaying it as a more positive image. During a recent council meeting, Lindon Days organizer Ben Walker asked city officials if calf riding and team roping could be included in the to know whether there is some kind of liability insurance the city has to have," Walker said, City administrator Ott Dameron said people who want to participate in the new events will nave to sign a waiver, Just like riders who join other activities. "We don't have insurance for the participants, only the spectators, Dameron said. , Mayor Larry Ellertson asked Walker how many participants there might be and whether the event would pay for itself. - Walker said he could probably get as many calf riders as mutton busters, which is about 50. Councilwoman Lindsay Buyless suggested organizers consider putting a cap on the weight and age of children allowed to ride the calves, as is the case in animal events. "We don't want PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) all over us," Bayless said. Walker said although the events would require extra work, they are doable.
