The state is already in a legal battle to stop Private Fuel Stor- Rick Soulier National security can be affected by actions of all The human mind abhors ambiguity and can't abide not knowing the end from the beginning. It will naturally fill itself up with "what ifs" and catastrophize about worst-cas- e scenarios. We saw this illustrated graphically last week in TV news. Network news programs are not really interested in news per se; they are interested in high ratings. So they keep viewers anxious with sensationalism, so we will want to watch the news constantly. They wanted to keep their airwaves full of chatter, so they interview people who let their imaginations run amuck. The catastrophizing, not to mention the "them versus us" stereotyping, flashes across the nation. The workings of the mind are not bad in and of themselves. They can spare us from doing dangerous acts. In bad times, our minds may obsess about how widespread evil is and has been in the world. It pan make us feel hopeless. The persistence of evil is a threat to personal and national security. Yet equally remarkable is the persistence of good and virtue. We can always find good people willing to act justly and help in times of need. Despite decades of scarcity and war, the Middle East and Africa are fall of good people doing what they can to make life better. Not everyone responds to adversity by becoming hate filled, evil, or terrorists though it's easy. Good endures in these places. TV news in North America and Europe has, however, generally downplayed the suffering there. Nor have North American and I.. European governments really been successful in promoting good solutions that would reduce violence and hatred. Of course, certain interests weapons manuhave an facturers, for starters interest in expanding hatred and violence. Even in times of crisis, we may choose how we will act. If we are in international business, we can provide quality products and good service for an honest price. Or exploit others. At home and work, we may behave in such a way that people will want us preserved. Or we can act in ways that will encourage people to be joyous when we are dead. we-ca- It is our choice. We rely on militaries and weapons for protection. They protect us to an extent, but the way we act and treat others is also crucial to national security. l.IHALD CDITOrJAL Nuclear waste makes an . espe- cially tempting target for someone looking to create panic and take as many lives as possible. Proponents of the plan will argue that is an unlikely scenario because the fuel rods are encased in reinforced casks that could survive a train accident and are age from setting up a temporary storage area for nuclear material on the Skull Valley Band of Goshute's reservation in the desert west of Salt Lake City. Tribal leaders have jumped at the offer as a way to bring money into the impoverished reservation, but Gov. Mike Leavitt and other Utahns see it as an ecological disaster waiting to happen. Leavitt has also argued that Utah does not have nuclear reactors and, therefore, shouldn't have to be the dumping ground for spent fuel rods. But we are now, for all intents and purposes, engaged in a war with an enemy that has shown it can strike us where we least expect and wreak untold havoc I I waste dispossiD Noodeaiir n;.T a: ; IUnVTMtcld com) THE DAILY HERALD (w MEYERS W4 2544 W. LETTERS , T0TII2CD1TC.1 L' Attack on freedom, not Israel Even if those who say that US. support for Israel had to do with the terrorist attack are right, it makes no difference. It's an attack on the freedoms they seem to enjoy very much. They want us to appease the Palestinians by taking away from Israel. That's exactly what Clinton tried to do through the Oslo Accords and meetings between Israel and the PLO for eight years. Israel offered to make more concessions than what the PLO had requested initially. Israel thought appeasing was the way to stop the suicide bombers attacking them. What did the Palestinians do? They rejected Israel's concessions and sent more suicide bombers, because they hate Israel and want it destroyed. Now there turning those attacks on us. Terrorists are like little brats. When they sec that their whining and misbehavior work to get toys, they'll whine and make bigger trouble to get bigger toys. Because they have a bigger goal than just appeasement. It's the destruction of the Great Satan, the United States and its fellow demon, Israel. That's why President Reagan in the 1980s said we would not negotiate with terrorists. He knew appeasement was not the answer. It just makes them hungrier for destroy the people. The people who love their country are the ones who need to be armed. Why? Because you cannot hire enough U.S. Marshals to cover everybody, everywhere, all of the time. Drivers licenses have ID pictures. On the back, put an information strip like the banks ATM cards have, only with the type of government clearance that the individual has. Using weapons permit as an example, have classes all around the country and encourage all U.S. citizens to take concealed weapons classes and train them how to respond to different situations and on how to use their weapons. This information would be compared with the federal databank and recorded that a trained weapons permit holder was to be on that flight. People who are frequent travelers and pilots should all be encouraged and trained to carry a more. We didn't answer properly to the terrorist acts during the Clinton years. Instead we tried to appeal to the PLO and the terrorists got bolder. They understood we wouldn't stop them. Appeasement is not the answer. It just does not work. Not before, not now, not ever. Terrorism is a war to weapon. Only the too young, the too old and some who are mentally unable for one reason or another could not carry a concealed weapon. The U.S. Government is stupid if the people are not armed and involved in this type of warfare. Besides, the people are already at the spot of terrorism activity. The government is missing the There are still two other very and probably the most reasons that the citiimportant zens should be involved. They would take pride in helping their country and they will work for nothing for their country. R. This is one way to heal, I thought to myself. don't think we have been unpatriotic, but the flag could've been flying more often. The power of the red, white and blue image is evident. What a great sense of pride it emulates to us all. We ask ourselves how, if we are not in the area, how do we help and heal? It is very clear how we can do both-fl- y Old Glory! Let the world, and especially, terrorists, know how proud we are of our country and freedoms. We are not a perfect nation, but as close to it as there is. The power of the flag is great. From the sight of her after the first battle, to when military and rescuers draped a flag over the Pentagon, we saw that amid the tragedy, the flag was still there. I A TOW who received notice' they were to be freed, showed no emotion until he saw the flag on the U.S. jet. He knelt and cried, giving thanks to God he was an American citizen. It is amazing, the power of a simple piece of material. Let us show it to the world, not just on holiduys, but often, after all, the freedoms are always here, let us always be mindful of thorn.
