Show Sdy, John Larroquette relates to "The Incurable Collector" in A&E series By Jay Bobbin, Tribune Media Services fI gotten a little crazy with the idea that anything old is worth a great deal of money. Maybe it's insecurity over the world's current economic system that fuels the notion that well find treasures in trash, but there are so many outlets where you can hunt for stuff now, its value may be overestimated. That's not so much the case with books, because you know what you're dealing with. A signed, copy is not an abstract." The Internet has made it easier for collectors to find what they seek, but Larroquette prefers physically hunting for such treasures. "I don't think I've ever bought anything over the Internet," he reflects, "because I've been collecting long enough where I have relationships with certain deal- era around the world. They just know what I'm looking for, but whenever I go somewhere new, I head for the book store I can biggest second-han- d find. Just the smell of the paper gets me going. It's not as much fun sitting at my computer as it is crawling around the stacks in some old store." Larroquette reports that his collection amounts to "several thousand" volumes. "I have an office library where I keep most of them, but they're scattered everywhere. My wife gets a little irritated with me, because 111 occasionally be sitting in bed reading a book that cost quite a bit of money, but I love just touching the pages. That's especially true if the book has been signed by the author. To know William Faulkner actually touched something I'm holding in my hands is quite a thrill." He did so with regret, but Larroquette recently sold some of his books to make room for others. "Samuel Beckett is probably the author I have the most books of," he says. "I must have a thousand, and I could never part with those. I have copies of plays he used when he directed them, with his handwritten notes. Those will go to my children or a university. I have other books that are great, but there's not as much of an emotional attachment for me." Tobbies can turn into jobs I unexpectedly, something than -- L JJuhn Larroquette can now vouch for. The winner of four consecutive Emmys for "Night Court" has a new role as host of The Incurable Collector," an A&E series that settles into its regular time slot Sunday (12 p.m. a ET) after its debut in prime-tim- e week earlier. (Each episode repeats the following Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.) Larroquette profiles people devoted to collecting a variety of items, as demonstrated this week by someone who owns lots of memorabilia related to actor James Cagney. Such a pursuit isn't foreign to Larn roquette, since he collects books. "I read voraciously as a kid," he recalls. "My mother used to work in a downtown clothing store in New Orleans, and every day, I would be waiting for he on the steps of our house when she came home. She would always bring me eomic books, and I just loved them. It gave me a sense of security to have them because I knew my mother was thinking of me, and I'm sure that got into my subconscious somehow. "I was just always comfortable around books, so when I started making a little money and was able to buy the works of some of the authors I had read, I thought, 'It would be nice to have them the way they were first published.' I read a couple of books on collecting and started visiting a couple of book dealers in Los Angeles, and it just grew from there." o That gives Larroquette instant with anyone else who collects anything. "We've done a story about a and he guy who collects has 700 of them. There's nothing that someone, somewhere isn't collecting. Somebody probably has the navel lint of famous strippers of the 1930s. It obviously makes you feel good to have certain things around you, and that's why you do this." Acknowledging the popularity of the PBS program "Antiques Roadshow" as a big inspiration for "The Incurable Collector," Larroquette cautions, "It's first-editio- first-editio- 20th-centur- y Local Cable Conversion Guide I Most oarents "Ihspn arm oge is ive irpm oi designed tor would find this progrom suitable far all ages diB- - B!
