Pi H . hi t Provo BPW Hears Speech, Gives Award A speech on child abuse and the naming of the woman of the year were on last Thursday's agenda for the Provo Business and Professional Women's Club in the Green Room of the Mini Mall. Bessie Sullivan, chairman of the Woman of the Year program, announced Wanda Scott, president of the Provo BPW, as the recipient of the award. She was presented with an orchid corsags. , Norma Rossi introduced the speaker, Martin Sheeran. He is a graduate of Weber State College and has worked as a detective for three of his twelve years with the Provo Police Department. He was first assigned to investigate juvenile crime and now works with all child abuse cases. Detective Sheeran stated that many 'child abuse cases are incited by condi-- ; tions of economic hardships. Bruises and abrasions composed 67 percent of . the cases, with burns and scaldings the next highest category. Child abuse is prevalent in Provo and Utah County. Penalties are prison for a felony and jail up to one year for a misdemeanor, he stated. Sherran urged all citizens to report cases of suspected child abuse. Informers' names will be kept secret.
