Provo I uto-P- af 51 American, Arab Educators Meet A landmark SALT LAKE CJTY planning con on Higher Education and Arab Development, sponsored by the University of L'tah and attended by leading American and Arab educators was held recently in Beilagio Itaiv The conference is the first broad scale effort to explore cooperative education opportunities between American institutions and the Arab world The meeting was the result of Arab interest and University of Utah initiative ia seeking to identifv key higher education issues in the contemporary Arab world. The six day meeting, which was chaired in part bv Utah's President David P Gardner may lead to a much larger conference in the spring at a U S location, possibly on the U campus The sessions were held at the Rockefeller Conference Center in northern Italy The facility is frequently used as a retreat where scholars may pursue their work in relative seclusion Conference costs were substantially underwritten bv the Rockefeller Foundation Among the participants were Dr James A Perkins chairman of the Interna tional Council for Educational Development and former president of Cornell University Perkins also was recentlv appointed by President Carter as chairman of the President s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies The conference stems from an original proposal presented to Gardner by Dr Hassan Saab a noted Middle East scholar and educator Dr Saab, who has been a visiting professor and guest lecturer at the I Middle East Center, has widespread contacts tfl the Arab educational community After considering the proposal. President Gardner suggested the planning session to allow preliminary discussion of key issues raised by Arab participant"; It was subsequently determined that the sessions also would Assess the development of Arab institutions of higher education; ference Bel-lagi- OPEN DAILY SUNDAY 0. educational Examine past cooperation and consider possible expansion of efforts Determine the impact of educational institutions on development in the Arab world. Evaluate key issues in terms of future needs In his letters of invitation, Dr Gardner noted that the University of Utah s involvement is occasioned by its long standing interest spanning some 60 years, in the Arab world " The president also cited the University s reciprocal educational and research arrangements with Egypi. Libya. Jordan.
