The negotiations follow on the heels of one of the most exciting matches in local boxing history. Less than a month ago, on Oct. 22. Toni Pulu, the Tongan Terror, outlasted Jeff Shelburg in a fight that had the overcapacity crowd at the Salt Palalce standing, screaming and hollering from the beginning of the first round to the moves in basketball before a downtown crowd in Denver this week. The Troupe plays basketball on unicycles and puts on a display similar to the final bell. For 10 rounds the two fighters continually battered each other with crushing body punches and severe head blows that filled every minute with excitement as the crowd knew that one of the fighters could go down at any time. When the dust had finally settled at the end of the tenth round, Pulu had come away with an upset decision over the local favorite, Shelburg. It was Shelburg's first loss of his professional career after he had won his first 13 fights, 12 of them by knockout. After the fight, Shelburg's manager. Angelo Curley. admitted that he had taken Pulu too lightly during preparation for the fight and that overcon-fidencwas the key to Toni's upset win. Pulu hadn't fought in four years prior to the fight and Curley didn't think that he could take too many of Shelburg's punches. But it was Pulu who came out hitting the hardest while Shelburg took several pounds to heat up. Curley has been talking rematch since the end of the last fight and feels e that Shelburg deserves another shot at Pulu. He cites the fact that Shelburg was the main draw, not Pulu, and also that the public deserves to see another fight like the last one. However, Curley warns that the outcome of the rematch, if scheduled, might be different from the first fight. "We took Toni too casually and we didn't attempt to "psyche". Jeff last time, but the next time will be different." said Curley. Negotiations for a rematch have only just begun because Ron Roosendall has been in the hospital recovering from hip surgery. Now that Roosendall has recovered, an agreement may be reached soon for a rematch between the two sluggers. midwale cord great for fall'78 Montana State Eyes Unbeaten Season By United Press International Since Montana State relnstituted football back in 1908, the Bobcats have in won the NCAA Division II title 1976 but they have never had an unbeaten-untieseason. And Saturday they start the second half of the 1978 season, hosting Idaho State in the annual homecoming game. d Coach Sonny Lubick says this weekend's game is doubly important, because his Bobcats want to remain unbeaten, and a win will tie them with 0 Northern Arizona for first place in the Big Sky Conference standings. In the other league games this weekend, Idaho is at Montana Saturday acafternoon. And in tion, Weber State is at Utah and Boise both State hosts San Jose State Saturday night. NAU is taking the weekend off. Lubick says he's a litThe tle worried about his Bobcats' momentum, after narrow Big Sky wins against Boise State and Weber State. "So we're not overlooking Idaho State, even if they are 23." But Lubick says MSU may have Jones, second in the Big Sky in rushing, and quarterback Paul Dennehy, third in the league in total offense, will again lead the Bobcats. But, if Spoon can't play, ISU will have little to send against MSU. Spoon is the passer in the league going into the game. d Idaho at Montana is another homecoming game, and the Grizzlies may have found the man to give them a winning record this year in Rocky Klever. The quarterback was moved to tailback last week and he rushed for 109 yards in Montana's 7 upset of Boise State. Meanwhile, winless Idaho is having quarterbacking problems and averaging five turnovers a game. They'll have to solve both problems to 15-- win at Missoula, Mont. A win for Boise State this weekend may convince the Broncos to move up to NCAA Division I and join the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. BSU has already beaten Fullerton State and Long Beach State, and San Jose State will be the Bronco's third PCAA opponent this year. Weber State can move the ball through the air on the arm of quarterback Morris Bledsoe. However, the Wildcats' rushing game has been spotty, with only tailback Scott Roth having season. Rose May Be Moving - CINCINNATI (UPI) Pete Rose has played his entire major league career in a Cincinnati Reds uniform, but indications today were stronger than ever that Rose might be with a new team for season No. 17 next year. Rose on Thursday rejected a Cincinnati contract that Reds' President Dick Wagner termed "as high as we can "Future negotiations with the Reds at this time would be futile," Katz said after talking with Wagner Thursday. "Unless a miracle occurs. Pete will participate in the free agent draft next month." That "miracle," explained Kat7, would have to be the Reds offering Rose a lot more money than they have could. far. "Money," said Katz, "that's what it's all come down to. I don't think the Reds have offered Pete the kind of money he deserves. Rose's attorney, Reuven Katz, interpreting Wagner's statement as a offer." said the turn of events means it is now "much more likely" than ever that Rose may sign with another team. "The Reds said they were offering Pete the highest salary in club history. But salary is only one part of contracts Even the latest offer would not make Pete the highest paid Red.
