I really didn't plan on If it seemed a little like Old Home Week on the Marriott Cen- ter basketball court last Friday night, it was. When the Utah State Aggies took the floor Friday, two local high school products were there with them. Both starred for their respective teams in high school, but each took different routes to in Logan. Chris McMullin, who graduated from Orem High School in 1980, spent two years at Dixie Junior College before joining Utah State last seasoa Gary Beck, an American Fork High product who graduated in 1979, went directly to the Aggies from high school. Both have made a mark in college. McMullin, who was a 5 forward in high school, said he wasn't recruited much by any of the four year institutions coming out of high school despite a good high school career and a very good showing in the BCI tourney, which is why he chose the junior college route. "I wasn't surprised that I wasn't recruited by the big schools," he shrugged. "I was in kind of an 6-- By Mike Bascom Herald Correspondent getting recruited." The Orem grad chose Dixie because of the winning tradition of the JC. He had a highly successful career for the Rebels and drew the attention of both Utah State and BYU. Despite the Aggies season, or perhaps partly because of it, McMullin ended up in Logan. "I chose Utah State because they seemed a little more sincere, that is, they were recruiting me all year and I thought there was more of a chance to play right away for them," he said. "They'd been losing, and that meant they were ready for some changes. There was definitely a chance to step in and play." And step in he did, starting all 29 games for the NCAA tourney invitee Aggies and averaging 10.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. McMullin said he grew up his watching the Cougars play dad is a BYU graduate but is very happy playing for the Aggies. "I don't think I play any harder against BYU, although it is special playing in the Marriott Center since I grew up watching all the big names playing there. " he said. For the 8 Beck, the Aggies were the only four-yea- r school that recruited the Caveman star heavily, so he was also faced with the decision of whether or not to try the junior college route. "My brothers had a lot to do with my decision to go to Utah State right off," Beck recalled. "I wanted to stay in Utah, and my brothers thought I had the potential to play major college and wanted me to try, even if I had to sit a year or two and learn" So Beck opted for the Aggies, where he did sit as a freshman and learned the ropes behind stars like Dean Hunger and Brian Jackson and then left on a mission to Alabama. Since coming back, he's been trying to find his role on the Aggie team. "Sometimes I think going to junior college would have helped. I remember scoring 38 against Dixie when I was a freshman, and I wonder if playing a lot on a JC team would have made a difference," he said. He got about 12 minutes of playing time Friday against the Cougars and did well. "I've always been a Cougar fan. I want them to lose just two games a year," he smiled. Beck is the only married player on the Aggie team, and became the father of a baby boy earlier this year. "My wife, Bobbi Jo, had the baby while I was in Brazil with the basketball team. It was three weeks early," he said. "I called from Miami on our way back and found out then." n Contemporary yet tailored diamond pendants. 132-Tro- y, n, Pa, defeated Day, Pr; CC, defeated Smith, SF.
