Show Sunday, September Arts By MARY V. KAMMEYER Herald Arts Editor Adv. j Brigham Young University with a degree in theater, she is supporting herself as an actress in New The development of computers is the most exciting things that has ever happened in our society. Forty years ago, very few people had heard of a computer. Ten years ago, no one thought that we would be using them in our homes. Now, the predictions are that during the next ten years we will not only use them at home, but we will carry them in our pockets and rely heavily on them in our daily activities. They will have a far reaching effect J 'AM York. That's drive. 'She got to New York on a Tuesday and by Thursday she was auditioning for a show. That's discipline. . And straight out of college, she is acting 90 percent of the time and has seen 42 of the 50 states as a performer. That's talent. New York City wasn't new to Miss Mendez. She was born in New York but her family moved to Mexico Gty while she was in grade school. And that has also helped her. She is now English, Spanish and French, which she started taking in high school. "If you want to go into acting, get as many talents as you can," she says. "The more talent you can gain, the better your chances are. In New York, everyone can sing and dance and act, but not everyone speaks three languages or is trained in lighting and technical skills; or can juggle, play the castanets or do cartwheels. In an audition, something like that that can make all the one-hand- Adv. BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY one of after her graduation from backgrounds. She also mentioned that egos can get in the way. "It's an ego profession. But you cannot be like rats climbing up the pole, stepping on each other. You don't get anywhere that way. You must help one another. Nor can you rely on someone else's compliments or critisisms. That can crush you. Know for yourself what you can and cannot do. And never take personally what happens at an audition." Auditions can be tricky business. To prepare for a New York audition, Miss Mendez advises being there early. Have an song prepared and a GOOD resume with pictures. Sign up for a time to perform and make sure you are back in time. "You don't want to miss having your name called. And be ready to read from the script. At the callbacks, sometimes they'll have you improvise a dance. But do what you do best, first." "I love auditions. I always go with a positive attitude and I look at people and think 'I love you.' Then, like it says in in the book 'The Greatest Salesman', how can they turn down your best goods? I'm not scared because they are my brothers and sisters. And besometimes I get call-baccause they like ME even better than they like my audition. That's important because the cast will work together for a long time and Miss Mendez started her career when she was quite young. 14 years old to be an actress. I got involved in community theater and when I was 17, and then got an agent." She played mostly extras in Mexico City, and here in the U.S. she doesn't feel she needs an agent. Nor does she belong to the actors union, Equity. "Who needs Equity when you are making $200 a week and touring the country. (She's touring with the National Theater of Performing Arts.) It's the same with agents. I'm my own best agent. Maybe some day I'll need one. But not right now.'' After high school, Miss Mendez return to New York to go to Pace University in New York. I made "I was really gutsie all the mistakes. I didn't have a good resume. In fact it was homemade and the pictures were all real small. I didn't know how to audition and I knew nothing about the unions." After her first year in New York, she came out to visit BYU and see the Professional Actor's Workshop that they offer. "I liked what I saw and I loved the facilities. They just don't exist ir New York." So she left half of her belongings back East and planned on spending one semester at BYU. She ended up spending three years here and graduating. While she was in Utah, Miss Mendez got good experience. Besides her work at BYU, she did summer stock at Jackson Hole and at Sundance. "Jayne Luke (Sundance) gave me my first real break. I learned .acting, directing and choreography up there. They have all been wonderful experiences." . The more the person, the better the actor he will be. A vulnerable person is a vulnerable actor." Miss Mendez, who joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints while she was in high school, says sometimes it can be difficult to be a religious person in the acting business.
