Kapele then hit Rowe on a pass completion to the American Fork 32. Facing Kapele fired to Roberson for a first down at the nine. George Kaai-hu- e bulled through four American Fork tacklers on a sweep on first down for a touchdown, and, with the PAT, Provo took a 0 lead at halftime. The Bulldogs held American Fork again on the Caveman offensive series, forcing a punt on 4th down and six at the American Fork 24. But the Cavemen got another chance when the Bulldogs were called for holding on the punt, giving American Fork the ball on the couldn't capitalize on any of them. Finally, the Utes put a drive together, but it ate too much time off of the clock to give them a chance for the tying score. The drive lasted over four minutes and took 13 plays before Swim found Mike Robbins in the end zone from three yards out and a Swim connection to Robbins for a two-poiconversion pulled Uintah to within seven, 1 with 2:29 to go. Mountain View put together enough offense to last the full two and one-ha- lf minutes and a Karlin Wilkes completion from Payne gave the Bruins a first down and they ran out the clock. After shutting out the Payson Lions, 20-Friday night, they are 0 on the season and 0 in league play. "We played a good game," said Springville coach Ray Newbury. "We came close a couple of times and didn't score, but we did some good things out there." The Devils were held scoreless most of the first half by a tenacious Lion defense. But late in the second quarter, Springville sustained a drive that began at their own 38 and scored when quarterback Darren Cluff hit Jeff Thorpe with a strike. Russ Roden kicked the PAT and Springville was up Three plays later, the Devils got the ball back when Cluff intercepted a Rick Worthen pass and returned it to the Payson 33 yard line. It only took Cluff and his friends 53 seconds to cover the distance with Chris Childs going over from the eight for the score. Roden was wide with the kick but Springville still had a 13-- 0 halftime lead. Springville's last score was set up late in the third quarter when Cluff intercepted another Worthen pass and returned it 30 yards to the Payson 5. Two plays later, Cluff went over from the three on 0, flea-flick- er Region Seven win. Defensive pressure allowed the Bruini to tack Uintah quarterback Gary Swim at will throughout the first half and held the Ute backs to minus 20 yards and no first downs. With that kind of display the offense could do.no wrong and a pair of touchdown runs from Lance Myers and Mitch Johnson e gave Mountain View a comferta-bl28-- 7 halftime edge. But something happened to the Bruins when they came back on the field. A dominating performance that could have beaten anyone in Region Seven turned into an offense that could have been de fin-al- y - 28-2- Seven. They started missing tackles and being flagged down for almost everything they did. "We did such a good job in the first half, that the kids decided to take a vacation and they (Uintah) crept back into the game," Mountain View's Austin McNaughton explained. The Bruins lost intensity, according to McNaughton, and the Utes made it a ball game. Karl St. John's eight yard touchdown pass from Swim got the Utes going and with 4:38 left in the third quarter Uintah cut Mountain View's edge down to The Bruin offense spent all but four plays watching the Utes travel up and down the field from the sidelines during the third quarter and when the fourth quarter started, it might have been wise to keep them there. "We regained the lead and went In at halftime with a cushion." After making some defensive adjustments at halftime to help shut down the Dino passing attack, the Vikings held Carbon scoreless in the second half until the final seconds, when Carbon scored with no time remaining. The defense aided its own cause with two interceptions, one by Matt Norman and the other by Neil Peterson, and a fumble recovery by Phil Cook to stop Carbon drives. "We just weren't wrapping them up," noted Cook, talking about the times that Carbon runners would break for big gainers after apparently being stopped for no gain. The Dlnos did a good job on the Pleasant Grove offense in the third quarter1, holding the Vikings scoreless on their only possession by picking off a Thomas pass deep in thler own territory. But in the fourth quarter, Pleasant Grove struck for two scores to move the game out of reach. "We're still a young team, and we're still making mistakes," said Bluth after emerging from a locker room full of excited and confident Vikings. "We need to tighten up defensively, be more intense. However, we did make one step forward tonight. "This is only the first week. You don't crown a champion until week five. We still have a lot of problems to clear. We're too young to be considered a real contender yet," he added cautiously. The running of Morris, who racked up 154 yards on 14 carries, and the blocking and catching of the wide receivers were keys to the game, Bluth added. "Jeff Hamner, our center, did a fine job against a good nose guard," he added. Mark Nielson and Jeff Otteson carried the Dinos in rushing. Nielson had 65 yards and Otteson 97.
