But when Mary Ann I HEAR SOMETHING! Evans, who lived from 1819 to 1880, IT MU5T BE THE 6REAT began to write fiction, she signed PUMPKIN! HE'S C0MIN6! her work "George Eliot." Under that name she wrote her THE 6REAT PUMPKIN 15 COMING!! way to fame, not only as a great English novelist, but as one of the great novelists of the world. Mary Ann (or Marian) had a father who was manager of a large estate, She lived there for the first 21 years of her life. It was there she eained knowledge of country ways and people. During this time she studied German, Italian and music. FRANK AND ERNEST When she was 22, her father moved to the town of Coventry, and it was there that Mary Ann made several interesting friends among literary men and women. From then she gained new ideas and freedom of thought. Later she became assistant editor of a publication, and through this job and because of her fine intellect and interest in new ideas, she met and became friendly with many of the prominent people of the day. She began to publish stories, and then came to the first of her many novels, "Adam Bede."
