SALE ENDS SEPT. -- Comer (3) a 10 20 0 g There's always a couple of minutes when a driver drives off the end of the racetrack and rolls his car as Alan Longman did Saturday at Round About Raceway in Pleasant Grove. The seconds seem like hours until someone gives the "he's okay" sign and then the heart starts working again and the crowd breathes a sigh of relief. The stock main event was just into its first lap when Longman's car dived off the west end of the side two and one-ha-lf track, rolling side-ovtimes. Safety belts and harnesses kept the driver from injury. Alex Oostveen went on to take the victory in that stock main event. Leif Ellington had the lead before a spinout on the third lap let Oostveen get the edge. Moments later Hal Leonard and LeAlma Rhoades gave track officials a scare when they tried to avoid a collision with each other and both ended up driving hard and fast into the middle of the oval and almost over some of the track personnel. The most exciting part of the main event was the battle for second. Kim Gardner tried repeatedly to move into that position and finally was successful on the seventh lap. LeAlma Rhoades took the victory in the stock slow heat, but Rick Bishop, who was holding onto third place, spun out going into the checkered flag and Ellington took that honor. Limited class drivers, as always, were fighting hard for the wins and passing the honors around. Don Willingham led the main event until mechanical trouble sent him off in the fourth lap. Norman Rhoades took command then and managed to keep Marty West from gaining any edge though West repeatedly tried to pass. Gary Oliver of Price was third, even after spinning out twice in the race. In the teen class heat, Bob Leonard and Corina Rhoades were battling for second place. A collision on the east end of the track during the white flag lap decided the matter but it was Wade Longman in second behind Troy Davis, giving him a triple win. Rhoades came out of the tangle to take third. and (3) (10-3- J) G (19), Major League Leaders National Olivr. er X,. f JQVfcjn 4-FA- II Ir II II il I , b 33 S J Our reg. 4.97 J SHEETS six pockets, pad, Velcro closure. Mike Harris started things in the limited late model heat. Coming down the front straightaway, Harris got too close to Charlie Smith. Both cars have wide tires that stick out from the body. When one gets too near the other, one driver can ride up on top of the other's tire. Such was the case for Harris. Although he could have tipped over, Harris didn't and finished the race. Street stock main drivers were Involved in a lot of action, too. Stan Brereton and Dan Draper both spun out on the west end of the oval during the lOtrh lap, halting the race. But, before things could stop, Victor Hatch spun out on the east end after blowing a tire. Then Joe Jacobsen went 'flying' into the center of the track and over the top of a car parked there. Later Draper had to escape from his car in front of the stands as it caught fire.
