Olberding a 9 forward who averaged only 12 points per game during the regular season, outmuscled Malone all night, denying the rebounding king his usual position near the basket. Malone who had scored 27 points in Houston's win Tuesday night and who averaged 31 in the Rockets' mini-seritriumph over I w Angeles, was limited to 21 points Wednesday night and wasn't a major factor. Houston's frustration finally boiled over with 10:19 left in the game, when Malone shoved backup center Paul Griffin, who had matched Olberding in effectively guarding the mammoth Houston center. The two had to be separated by teammates but the game progressed without further incident. In addition to Olberding's 34 points, George Gervin scored 22 and Brewer had 21. Calvin Murphy paced the Rockets with 34 points. "The basket looked awful big to me." said Olberding, who hit shots from the field. "I was looking for the Moses Mai one never knew what hit him Wednesday night ... and hit him ... and hit him... San Antonio's Mark Olberding, one of the NBA s most physical players leaned on Houston's center Wednesday night at the Hemisfair Arena and somehow found 34 points to time to score a career-hig- h 3 lead the Spurs to an easy triumph. The methodical victory evened their Western Conference semifinal series at a game apiece, with the next two games at the Houston Summit. "Mark has the toughest assignment in this series," said thankful San Antonio coach Stan Albeck. "He went out there and fought Moses for 44 or 45 minutes. And then to do what he did on the offensive end signaled what kind of game we had." Olberding and backup guard Ron Brewer led a second-quartsurge that gave San Antonio a 1 halftime lead. Houston, which had won previous playoff games on the road this year, cut its deficit to eight points at the end of shots. Everything just fell into place for us."
