"I've been through cancer and chemotherapy, blessings, tears and surgery and I feel as you do that I will come out a winner," one woman wrote. Becky learned in January she has a rare form of leukemia and for the past four months has had chemotherapy as doctors have hoped the disease would lapse into remission. A week and a half ago a fund was created to raise the $60,000 needed to send Becky to the UCLA Medical Center for a bone marrow transplant. Since then over 5,000 donations, totaling more than $100,000 has been received to help Becky's cause. "I'm in college and broke as usual but I hope this small amount will help," a BYU student worte. Many of the letters were from cancer patients offering encouragement to the slender blonde-locke- d girl. "I also have a cancer but I'm going to 'lick it' too," a girl wrote Becky. Becky sorts through letters. "I have found it reassuring that almost all the letters have included the statement, 'our prayers are with you," Becky's mother Ann Barton said. "It's overwhelming the response we have received." Most of the donations have been from families along the Wastach Front, but individuals further away have become in- asked if she could help," Edson Barton. Becky's father said. "She started calling her friends across the nation and several days later she had $1,052 for Becky." Another man, who was in Salt Lake waiting for his next airplane, heard Becky's plight on the radio and donated "One woman read the first story about Becky' in the paper and came over and "It's unbelievable what this community money. volved to. has done." He said with ham radio equipment, the downed party was able to make contact with company officials in Utah for help. He said by March 31. all seven men had been taken into the custody of Brazilian authorities for questioning. Wood said the Brazilian officials were "suspicious" of the Utahns' presence in that country because of the mining and radio equipment aboard the downed planes. He denied news reports the men have been charged with gold smuggling and said the officials in the South American country were taking normal precautions in the investigation. "Our Brazilian counsel has repeatedly emphasized that at no time have any formal charges been placed against the men as has been reported in Brazil and America," he asserted. Wood said Utah Sen. Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch, and Idaho Congressman George Hansen have been working on the negotiations thus far. After he read a prepared statement. Wood explained that all seven are being detained in a hotel and not a jail or prison.
