Harpring has been plagued by knee injuries and an ankle problem. Last year he developed a strep infection after a June surgery to remove a bone spur in his right ankle. Utah Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor made the announcement Wednesday that Harpring can't play for now and that his status will be in six weeks. Harpring has said he's unsure whether he'll be able to play again. Harpring has appeared in 665 games over 11 seasons with Orlando, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Utah. Orem started with a frustrated manager and little pitching depth, as it often lost big and never really showed consistency. Win one, lose one became a routine as much as brushing teeth and batting practice. Somewhere along the way, it it clicked. The PGA Tour schedule for 2010 is not expected to be finalized until its board meeting the first week of November, and except for some juggling of dates on the West Coast the first two months of the year, it likely will look similar to this year. The bigger concern is some 10 title sponsor contracts that expire after 2010. "I suspect it's possible that we could lose a couple more events," Finchem said at the Tour Championship. "I think it's likely that we will lose some title sponsors, and they'll need to be replaced. But thus far, we've been able to handle that." Even as the recession deepened earlier this year, the tour managed to get contract extensions with title sponsors for two World Golf Championships and Bridgestone), New Orleans (Zurich) and Hartford (Travelers). Its biggest success might have been landing SBS as a title sponsor for the season- - pressively beat the mark set by the 2003 (then Provo Angels) roster that had several players go on to make names of themselves at the major league level. Two consecutive wins followed against Ogden to reach the championship round. "In a lot of ways it doesn't make a lot of sense," Kotchman said. "But with every team, every summer, we (coaching staff) are always preaching about not getting complacent. Come to work with a chip on your shoulder and prove people right or prove them wrong. Maybe more than any other group we've had in eight seasons in Utah, this one took that message to heart," Then Kotchman reels off the pertinent stats, and there are reasons why the Owlz were V kings again. Orem led the PL in batting average (.297), largely on the consistency of Dillon Baird (league-bes- t .372) and Casey Haerther (.350, third) and produced the most walks to offset being one of the more meager home-ru- n bashers. Still, Finchem said it seemed unlikely the tour could make it to 2011 without losing some title sponsors. "I just think there are too many companies that have issues, although they all want to stay with us now," he said. "But 1 think that it's highly unlikely we would go through '1 1 without some turnover. Now, we don't have a problem with changing sponsors. We don't want to; we like the continuity. It's just that especially in a downturn, it's hard to sell through to already reduced marketing budgets." The only title sponsor that has said it would not renew after 2010 is FBR, which had the popular Phoenix Open. The tour lost the Buick Open in Michigan, yet was able to replace it with a new tournament in West Virginia, the Greenbrier Classic. Buick's other tournament, at Torrey Pines, is run by the Century Club in San Diego and is confident it will have a replacement sponsor before it is played the final week of hitting attack was paced by former rivals. BAD IN A GOOD WAY: Orem had what appeared to be some bad breaks on the way to Missoula, where the Owlz won Games 2 and 3 to take home the fourth Pioneer League title since 2004. The Owlz could have been despondent after losing last Wednesday on a three-ruhome run when they were one strike from winning. Then the team had to travel 575 miles by bus, and the DVD player didn't work. "Being on the road helped us in a few ways," Kotchman said. Travis Witherspoon, meang while, was a who couldn't hit in the first half. The off ense caught up with his glove, as he blasted all six home runs and flashed one of the most promising skill sets on the roster. He was the team's most improved player. "Travis was hitting No. 9 at the beginning of the season for a reason," Kotchman said. "Later in the year, he was still in the 8 or 9 hole. But you had to be careful with him. Some teams weren't, and he made them pay." slick-fieldin- er Everything came together the final two nights in Missoula. The region games were expected to be intense with so many good programs fighting for the four available playoff berths. They have been, and I expect they will remain so. The outcome of those two Brighton contests mainly serves to underscore the high level of talent in the region and the old coach's truism that no team can safely be overlooked. Spanish Fork and Uintah were forced to postpone hsiday's football game because of : a fly outbreak in Vernal. It's unfortunate that an athletic contest was affected, but given the circumstances, it would have irresponsible to do anything else. ft LLOYD: I think this is a very big deal because it really changes the way the season plays out. Unlike baseball or softball when teams face each other multiple times, football is a game where teams work a full week to get ready for a single contest. Now both the Utes and the Dons have to tell their kids, "Hey, don't forget what we worked on because we'll need it again three weeks down the road." Officials did the right thing here but it could change how things shake out in Region 8. 3 Springville and Maple Mountain are both unbeaten in Region 8 girls soccer and meet twice in the next couple of weeks. Which team is going to emerge at the top of the standings? LLOYD: I love what head coach Carolyn Swenson and her young, talented Golden Eagles have done this year. Other than a single contest against Bear River, Maple Mountain has been streaking through the competition. That said, I don't think they get the Red Devils this season. I think Springville has a lot of firepower and it will be a lot to ask for the Golden Eagles to stop the Red Devils. Springville better be ready for a challenge, something it needs as the state tournament nears. BEATON: These two teams are clearly the class of Region 8 this year no one else is even close.
