He was born February 29, 1932 In Preston, England. He was the eldest son of Clifford and Mary Wilkinson Hartley. He had 9 sisters and 3 brothers. His family immigrated to Utah in 1949. Gordon Proudly served In the US Army during the Korean War and while stationed in Frankfurt, Germany received his US citizenship. He married Cecilia Garcia in 1955 and they had 3 children. They were later divorced. He married his sweetheart and eternal companion Gwen Reid in 1969 In the St. George temple, and became the stepfather to her 7 children. Gordon had various jobs in his life Including shoe salesman, mailman and finally upholsterer. He retired from BYU. After retiring he and Gwen moved to Hurricane, .UT. ' Gordon truly loved the gospel and served in many LDS church callings including bishoprics and branch presidency. He and Gwen served two missions in England. He loved to sing, dance, travel, camp, and tease his grandchildren and He is survived by his children and stepchildren Mary Sproles, Dale Hartley, Margaret (Terrence) Gilmore, Ron (Bernie) Jones, Roger (Diane) Jones, Mark (lllene) Jones, Karen (Marvin) Kovatch, Kent Jones, and Floyd (Tracey) Jones. We don't know what pumped his blood for the next 92 years, but considering all. the goodness and love he exhibited to those around him and all the fun he had throughout his life, he didnt really need more of a heart anyway. John Glade Olson was bom In Fairview, Utah, the seventh child of Christian Peter and Maud Maria Anderson Olson. He and his "twin" brother Rees grew up in Fairview and Payson as a part of a strong, loving family. He learned to have fun from his Scottish mother and developed his work ethic after the death of his father when John was only fourteen. After graduating from Payson High School in 1937, where he was drum major for the band, he served an LDS mission in Sweden for eleven months until World War II broke out and Europe, was closed to the missionaries. He finished his mission in the Central States Mission in Kansas. Upon returning home, he joined the Utah National Guard, serving in the Pa cific during the war. He later said that he didnt feel like a true vet eran because he and his' meteorology Unit had "so much fun" on their adventures. He was honorably discharged from theU.S. Army with the rank of staff sergeant. After the war, he met and fell In love with Edith Elizabeth Johnson from Benjamin, Utah. They married in the Salt Lake Temple on August 28, 1946. Over the next 14 years, six darling daughters were bom to this union, and he proved to be the best daddy ever. After John graduated from BYlf with a degree in Biology in 1949, they moved to Mink Creek, Idaho, where he began his teaching career. He taught at the elementary school there, and then acted as principal of the same school before teaching Biology at Preston High School. After Edith died, he married Cleo Lundstrom Griffin in the Logan Temple on September 12, 1972. He also enjoyed being stepfather to her five children and grandfather to many. John often said that he wasnt having fun unless he was working. He was always so busy that it's hard to mention all his accomplishments. Over the years, he used his talents as a carpenter to build four different houses for his family and worked on almost every house in mink Creek and surrounding areas. He loved to garden and was famous for landscaping with thousands of beautiful flowers as well as growing strawberries, kohlrabi, gooseberries, and asparagus. He bought and ran the small country store In Mink Creek for a number of years. He loved the gospel and served In several LDS bishoprics and a number of different callings with the youth. The Scout camps he organized were legendary. He and his family were custodians for Lin-do- ' months.
