SECT UIICUCC The American novelist Richard Wright was born on a plantation near Natchez, Mississippi, on September 4, 1908. His father deserted the family when Richard was S and his mother, a schoolteacher, had to support the family. They moved to several different states and sometimes Richard was put in an orphan tcylum until his mother could take care of him again. At IS Richard went to Memphis and worked as a porter. He liked to read, but the Negro libraries he Ernst & ,i J V had to use had few books. A white friend borrowed books from the white library for him. Later on he entered politics and became a member of the radical movement. He went to New York and wrote a "Guide to Harlem" for the Federal Writers' Project. A book of short Tom's "Uncle stories, Children," was a success. The next year he was able to finish his first novel, "Native Son", which was about 8 young Negro murderer and which is still considered an important book. Wright broke with the radical movement in 1944. In 1946 he moved to Paris with his wife and daughter. "The Outsider", a novel of violence and hate, is about a Negro who had been a radical. "Black Power" is a report of Ms trip to Africa in 1953. His most popular book is his REDEYE LI'LABNER WHEN AH WAS MORE PUc AH FELL IN LOVE WIFALI'L GAL.
