Came From 'Behind The Dons had come from be hind to knot the count and then move ahead on some sensation al shooting by Rdean Clark, Span ish Fork's big shooting ace for this season. With the score tied on Clark's 5 side shot at and the jam crowd packed making it almost even think, the to impossible All big Region Five end broke loose out of a defensive tieup to slam the ball through the- hoop and give the Fbrkers their first lead of the ball game. Marian Roper, ace center, who has been on the ailing list with the flu for the past two weeks, fouled out, but Neil Reiggs failed to convert. However, Mark Murry, who apparently had ice water in his veins most of the evening, hit two foul pitches, and after Clark had upped the lead again with two charity throws, Brent Bargeron knotted the count on another pair of throws on his one and one stand at the foul line. With time running out Provo regained possession of the ball end a cross court pass went to Murry, who slipped down the sfide-line, then let the ball -- fly for the hoop beating the buzzer by a split fraction. There was no time to put the ball in play and the game end ed with practically every person in the gym on his feet with Murry's throw. The loss of Laird Swenson, fancy shooting forward, who had fouled out with 3:30 to go, hurt the Bulldog chances, and many fans had given up hopes when Thomas, his replacement, missed two long attempts at the hoop, and both had Been convert ed into Spanish Fork scores. The first part of the game was a slow and deliberate affair with neither team able to break away for the hoop, but Brent Bargeron finally broke the ice for Provo and Rdean Clark went under the basket for a layup for Spanish Fork. Laird Swenson and Brent Bargeron hit again in quick succession, and Marian Roper counted for the Dons for their only points of the quarter. Neil Riggs, Bargeron and Swenson followed up with counters and the Bulldogs led 19-- 4 at the rest period for an ' apparently safe lead. Sparks Dons John Anderson sparked the Dons in a second period rally that steadily cut down the Bulldog rally. The Dons were aided by an extended second period brought about by the stopping of the clock at 6:15 and the.Forkers continued the onslaught at the hoop with no clock to stop them. The timing was finally restored and while the clock worked erratically the rest of the game, a stop watch kept the time from getting out of hand again. Anderson slipped in 14 counters in this period, and aided by a steal by Jim Black, some nice shooting by John Evans and Rdean Clark, and some great ball handling by the entire Spanish Fork team, they brought the count to 8 at the halfway mark in the , game. The third quarter was a nip and tuck affair with Clark, Black and Evans doing most of the shooting for the Dons, and Laird Swenson, assisted by Brent Bargeron and Neil Riggs trying to maintain the Bulldog lead. The period ended with the Bulldogs still out in front P by a 4 margin. Came Into Game Dale Nelson came' into the game for the Dons in the final quarter . and he sparked their drive with a pair of baskets and a. freethrow to help narrow the gap between the two teams. Then . 4 , 29-3- 52-4- ; when Rdean Clark opened up with his sensational play the crowd went into near hysterics. When the buzzer had sounded j and the roof settled back in place, it was the steady, nerve--, less play of Mark Murry that drew the attention of most of the fans who remained to' talk. Hi cool shooting of a pair of gap closing fouls and hissplit second final game winning shot gave spectators , a thrill that will be lived over again and again throughout the coming weeks, Murry led all pointmakers with 20 counters, followed t by Rdean Clark, with 19 for the Spaniards, and 17 for the soft shooting Laird Swenson. also hit in double, figures for the Dons, as did Neil Riggs and Brent Bar- geron for the Bulldogs. .
