This particular hunt was not scheduled last spring when field surveys showed bird numbers were down at that time. Only torn turkeys will be legal game with a two bird limit for the season. The hunt will be held in those south-stat- e counties previously open to such hunting and the bird population is up this year. As in the past, turkey permits will cost $3 and they are unlimited to anyone holding a hunting license. These birds in Utah are found in the ak type habitat across Southern Utah from the Kolob - Zion Park to the Boulder and La Sal mountains country. Nationwide they are considered a trophy bird, are among the most wily gume known, and the 10 percent hunter success usually bettered in the seasons here is considered exceptional. This one something to look forward to if yours is an early itching trigger finger and- wish for some real spring time exercise. Shotguns and center fire rifles are the hgal weapons. The Board also set Nov. 13, as the opening day of the annual pheasant season this year. Length of season, bag limits and other controlling factors will not be set until the latter part of August when field data on success of the spring hatch has been gathered. This is the latest pheasant opener in many years and the action was taken in response to the recommendations of the Utah Farm Bureau which for several years had claimed it would be much more payable to agriculturists on whose lands the great share of this hunting is done. It was agreed to set the later opening on a one year trial basis to see if this would alleviate some of the problems while still trespass-damag- e allowing for a normal harvest of birds. Among other actions the Board approved granting an easement across the Hardware Ranch property to the AT&T company for laying an underground telephone cable. They denied a Naiional Park request to sell or exhange lands the F & G division holds in the Dinosaur Monument area on the basis that the land offers some good deer along with the only access to the Greenriver for goose hunting and other recreation in the immediate area. A recent Supreme Court decision to let stand an appeal courts decision denying a land fill in Tampa Bay is being titled a conservation victory. The often maligned Army Corps of Engineers had earlier denied a group of Florida land developers the right to build an island in the bay on land they owned. The Corps based the denial on the grounds the project would harm fish and wildlife in the area. The Corps decree of denial was appealed to the courts and the Supreme Court sided with the lower court opinion when it refused to hear the case. All of which puts the Corps in a much better conservation light as it shows the great swing toward environmental-conservatio- n thinking and support in recent years. That's the kind we have in our entire organization. But when I talk about John personally I must say I dont know of any other athlete who has had as much success in so short a time who has conducted himself any better. He obeys the rules.
