UTAH. SATURDAY, JUNE 6. 1875. TRAVELING FOtt HIS 1IEAIJTH. We hope the readers of the Jcif will be kiad enough to o?er-looanj deficiency in the management of the editorial columns for a brief period, aad as an excuse for such deficiency tho ad interim offers, in adrance, the fact that the editor, C. W. Penrose. Esq., who has for the past five years so ably and assiduously labored for the public thrcagh the columns of the Junction, being somewhat out of health and requiring a respite from the setere mental aad physical toil to whirh he has been subject for so many year9, has decided upon a brief trip to. the mountains, where, released from the daily duties of his office, he can enjoy such rest as he so much requires, and aided by the bracing air of a higher altitude, as well as the use of the medicinal waters at Soda Springs, k The buildings destroyed were, one small building owned by II. I. Keistl, one small office, owned by the W. U. Telegraph Co.; the Delnionico, owned by J. B. Czacbert; a portion of a building owned by A. Landt, besides a number of kitchens, sheds and other out houses. We are unable to give the auieunt of loss at this fire, but suppose that it may not exceed $5,000. We understand that the property de stroyed was fully insured through the agency of Messrs. Burns and Suied-- 1 ley, of Salt Lake City. We cannot con lude this article without awarding to the officers and members of the fire brigade all honor and praise lor the prompt, active and euergetic discharge of their duties, and where all have worktd equally well, we do not feel disposed to make any invidious distinction by singling out any particulai name as worthy of he hopes so to recuperate as to be special praise. It is proper also to able, within a few weeks, to return to mention that a great many citizens his field of labor with renewed Vigor, not connected with the fire depart and prepared for active service as ot yore. It is to be hoped that, as Mr. Penrose goes out well supplied with the "mechanical implements" so deftly handled in olden time by the immortal fishermai, Isaac Walton, Mr. P will be enabled to supply the editorial brain with such aliment as may bs obtained frem as good a supply of beautiful trout as are said to be found in the Blackfoot and other northern streams. Trusting that ere many weeks Mr. Penrose will return to his home in perfect health, we commend him to the kindly attentions of whom soever he may meet in his winding way, and bid. him adieu for a few days. Should the health of tie editor penult, our readers may expect to hear from him occasionally, while ol his travels. AXOTIIEIt FIRE. ment, were active in their efforts to stay the ravages of the fire and to save personal property. We heard of no accidents at the fire, and presume that none occurred. We would like to use the present occasion to call tho attention of the City Council to the importance of taking into consideration, in advance of the necessity, the question of safe city, bound to ty to tha future exist whero the Ogden of y stands. It is hardly probable that the founders of Ogden, when its first la-ry- to-da- htakes were driven, hati any con- ception of what the future had in store w for the coming geninhabit this eration who Bhall favored spot. But whether they designed or expected a large town to be built here or not, one thing they must have had in view, i. e. its loca tion as to a water supply, in this respect nature has made ample provi sion in placing within easy reach, the Webar and the Ogden rivers. The construction of a national highway'throogh our streets, and the selection of Ogden as the point of intersection of the C. lV and U. P. as weH as the Utah Northern and Utah Central ronds, are additional About eleven o'clock this morning an alarm of fire was nnde, and very shortly it was discovered that the cause of the alarm proceeded from the bakery attached to the Delmoni-c- o Hotel, kept by Mr. John kI3. Czachert. It has not been ascer- facts going to proYs that Ogden has tained, so far as we have been advised, how tie fire originated, but it is supposed to have been accidental. But little time elapsed before the Ogden Fire Brigade, under the command of Joshua Williams, its active chief, Was on the spot, and at Once proceeded in an energetic, though unsuccessful attempt to check the spread of the devouring element. The tiro was not put out until it had consumed several wooden buildings, a list of which we are able to present As is known by residents of Ogden, the Belmonico was situated near to, and east of, the buildings occupied by the V. P. and C. P. railroad com panies, a9 a temporary depot for pas sengers arriving at, and departing from this city, and but for a favor able condition of the air currents at the time, there is but little doubt that this building, as well as the eating hou?c, ticket offices and waiting rooms nould have shared the fate of the before lur a brilliant future. One suggestion we desire to make ia, that in the future it will be necessary to provide by means of water, to suppress the ravages of fire, and this tan be done ia no better mode, as we conceive than by such a svstem of water works as the wisdom of the council may devise and its finances wiil permit, and this safety we humbly suggest will in future years be best subserved by a judicious use ef rror "pipes and hydrants; and a3 a precautionary measure to prevent fires at the 'present tittie, "would it not be well for the ciy to adopt some regulation in regard to the erection of temporary and dangerous iu certain localities. build-lug- s The Switch Esoinb.
