Show THE SENTINEL a permanent magnet," reported Beus. It's safe to say that it was the related activities and home projects the students enjoyed most, however. Both teachers said they were extremely pleased with the level of sophistication ..in ir'rnr 1 CD V- - students the displayed in those projects. "I'm not exactly sure where they came up with the components for the projects," explained Child. "It looks like they may have picked them up out in the garage or some place like that." "Everyone did a lot of work in this unit," added Beus. "I really feel they gained a good understanding of the material." Beus said this was the second year they have staged the program at Westland. . Hi 51 ' Public Notice 1 NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN of a public hearing to be held on the 21 day of April 1983 at the Draper City Hall, 12441 South 900 East, Draper, Utah at 7:00 p.m. to consider the application for rezoning of property at 12900 South from RR-4- 3 and A S to (Mj acre). The area includes Fifth grade students from the classes of Paul Child and Debbie Beus at Westland Elementary show off home projects they built as part of their study of electricity, magnetism, and the atomic structure, (left to right) Melissa McCall, Bobbie Hickman, Megan Leary, Christy Moore, Justin Williams, Scott Taylor, Troy Henke, Leif Anderson, Michelle Henderson, Tami Kummer, Jason Stanley, Carl Simpson. About 60 students in all took Dart. 211 Westland fifth graders delve into the secrets of electricity times electricity must surely seem like a mysterious genie from a magic lamp, even At for those of us who were born and raised with it. We flip a switch and we have instant light, turn a dial and instant music, push a button and instant words and pictures. But, electricity is not magic. It is a real, physical force that we can measure, direct, and make use of. Sixty fifth graders at Westland Elementary recently gained some added insight into the "hows and whys" of electricity and took a look at magnetism and the structure of atoms and molecules as well. That might seem a tall order for fifth graders, but by the end of the two month unit students were constructing working telegraph units, simple radios, and models of atoms. According to fifth grade teachers Paula Child and Debbie Beus, it was decided to' bring in some optional materials that went beyond the regular curriculum and the students responded to the challenge. "Instead of getting the reaction of "Oh no science," we got, "Science, all right"," stated Child. The unit made use of films and film strips, discussions, and an introduction to some of the basic terms and vocabulary used in the study of electricity and magnetism. "They learned what current and static electricity were, the role on insulation materials, the composition of a magnetic field, 36 and what the ditterences are between an electro magnet and Hamilton receives Minuteman Award Senior Master Sergeant Robert E. Hamilton, First Sergeant of Headquarters, 151st Air Refueling Group, and also a resident in Midvale, has been selected to receive the Bronze Minuteman Award from the State of Utah for his meritorious service to the Utah Air National Guard and the Officers Academy Graduates Association.
