Show Want to be a good parent? "What are going to do?" "Nothing." Such "no information" conversations with teenage children can be extremely frustrating for parents, particularly if followed by an angrily slammed door and tires squeeling out of the driveway. Most often the communication problems which show up during the teenage years are actually a carry over of problems which began in early childhood and gained volume and intensity as the child grew older. From the time babies are born, most parents feel concern about their ability to help their children grow into happy productive adults. Some few happen naturally into the role of good parent, but for the vast majority parenting is a skill which must be learned through deliberate effort. Dr. S. Burt Chamberlain, a professional family counselor who holds a doctorate in education, says that the ability to be a good parent is like learning to play the piano, it can be learned by trial and error but is much easier to accomplish with the help of lessons. Dr. is Chamberlain in a class teaching parenting connection with Jordan School District's vocational Adult Education to help parents learn to communicate effectively with their children. The class will meet Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon at St. Joseph the Worker Hall, 7405 S. 1700 W., West Jordan, from Feb. 9 to April 6. The class is completely free and open to any parents interested in becoming more effective parents. During the course, Dr. children's misbehavior through encouragement rather than discouragement. He will teach listening techniques and explain ways parents can help children handle their own problems better without taking over for them. He will also explain the use of logical and natural consequences in place of punishment. Dr. Chamberlain promises that the class will be "down-to-eart- h and practical," dealing with the specific problems and concerns of the class members rather than with theory only. After 14 years of experience in family counseling, Dr. Chamberlain says that he continues to see the same family problems today that he saw when he first entered the profession, but he finds that today's problems appear with more urgency and relationships between parents and children seem to be getting worse. On the positive side, the doctor observes that today's parents are far more likely to recognize the need to improve communication with their children and no longer seem to feel any stigma attached to seeking help from professionals to become better parents. Dr. Chamberlain's classes have at various times been offered in Jordan, Granite, and Salt Lake School Districts. Parents from all walks of life and all economic levels have come together in his classes to deal with their common problems raising children. The happiest time in these free parenting classes, Dr. Chamberlain says, is when a parent comes back to class and says, "I tried it and it really works!" Chamberlain will teach skills Dance to feature 15-2- 22-2- 3. 8-- begin March 4. Further details are available from Boyd Zollinger.
