Webb, 46, topped 48 other bus drivers from throughout V, the Western United States ' recently in regional competi-tioat Las Vegas, Nevada, What surprised him more ij than anything was that half " of the competitors were women. And they were some "real top drivers," he added. "I've been driving for eight years. Once again, I've been I haven't had an lucky accident. When you're carrying up to 90 young people on your bus, you have an awesome responsibility," he ' n j' said. Why, an accident of any size at all could wipe out the young people in one community or whole neighborhood, nd it's that type of thinking that prompts more drivers to become the very best that they can in the work they do, Webb explained. 'best' "I don't drive as much as some drivers. My route for the Bingham High School and Southland Elementary students takes me between 10,000 and 12,000 miles a year," he said. The best way to help the situation is to give a bus driver the same route year in and year out. That way students could get to know the driver and he, in turn, could educate them on safe riding habits, he noted. "You never take anything or anyone for granted when you're driving a school bus," he cautioned. Webb qualified for the regional meet by competing in last year's Utah School . I know I've been trying to be a better driver since competing in last year's fall competition," he said. Asked how confident he was as he prepared for St. Louis National competition, he said: "I feel good about the tournament. In fact, I feel more confident about that tournament than I do about next year's TELL US state competition." Asked why, he said: "My wife's driving for the Jordan School District. II Includes normal Installation and Permit 429 00 More classes and flexibility in graduation requirements High school students will have to take more classes to graduate then in the past when the new state high school graduation requirements are adopted. However, greater emphasis will be placed on individualized programing and vocational training. A public hearing on the proposed changes is scheduled Thursday, June 24, at 7 p.m. in the Bingham High School auditorium. Citizens are invited to review and comment upon the graduation requirements during the three hour hearing. Under the new state guidelines, students will be.; required to 'demonstrate ability in basic skills such as reading, writing, and speaking in order to be eligible for graduation. They must show they have basic skills in mathematics, that they know how to effectively buy and sell, and that they understand how a democratic government works. Personal character will also be a consideration for graduation eligibility under the new guidelines. Students will be required to fill 16 units of credit, one more than the 15 credit units previously required. Communication (formerly called language arts) will drop from three credit requirements to two, but requirements will have one semester of supervised work, service experience, or career study added. Also offered will be education for parenthood, which can be used in place of 12 credit of social studies, and classes in personal and family finances. For the first time next year intermural sports and ROTC participation may be used in place of 12 unit of physical education credit. In the new graduation proposals alternate ways of earning credit are included. Because credit is to be based on progress in learning rather than in time spent, students, based upon ability and performance, may earn class credit in either shorter or longer times than normally required. Summer classes and on the job training may also be applied to high school credit requirements. As an alternative to the high school diploma, certificates of proficiency can be issued when students want to leave high school before they have completed all the requirements, provided they can demonstrate proficiency in basic skills.
