Show V 2 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, December 17, 1987 o u ' yjy u V5 Drinking Too Much And Killing Someone Is No Accidental Event Although there has been a significant decline in the percentage of traffic, deaths related to alcohol in the past five years, drunk driving remains the number one killer on our roads. In 1986 41 percent of the total traffic deaths involved at least one driver or pedestrian who was intoxicated. That's down from 46 percent in 1982. Teen statistics are also down from 28 percent percent to 21 percent in that same time period. As promising as improved statistics are, ; they are not much comfort to the families and friends of the 19,000 people killed last ; year in alcohol-relate- d crashes. Drunk driv- -' ers don't kill numbers. They kill people, i Young fathers, promising athletes and schol- ars, mothers, sisters, grandparents, brothers, ; close friends. : Inasmuch as alcohol seems to play a major ; role in how people socialize and this is the season where socializing is at its peak, we face a significant challenge in convincing ; people to use alcohol in moderation and to , avoid driving after drinking. Tougher laws, more enforcement and in- creased public and media attention have had an impact on the problem. Many responsible people have gotten the message, but the problem is far from solved. n ii u , . : the Editor: Murray City Power recently received an interesting complaint. One of our citi2ens called to complain about numerous street lights being "out for several months." He said he'd been watching to see how long it would take us to repair them, but it went on for so long that he finally, and angrily, called to complain. We appreciate this citizen's call to alert us to a problem that is only evident at night, after regular ; working hours. Within one day of the call, all of the lights in question were inspected and repaired, and were lit the following night. We only wish we had received this call when the problem was first noticed, so that repairs could have been made and the lights returned to service sooner. Maintenance of street lighting is a continuous challenge for any electric utility. The normal rate of failure due to any one of many electrical components can be greatly increased by problems with the supply lines, vandalism, weather conditions, etc. Yet, to continuously monitor all lights in the city is prohibitive in cost. We receive excellent cooperation from the night shift of the Police Department to identify lights that need repair. Nevertheless, our greatest resource for monitoring street light function is our citizens. We in fact rely heavily upon those residents who will take the time to notify Murray City Power when they see a light out of service. Their call is appreciated, will be handled courteously, and the problem will be dealt with promptly. With this type of citizen cooperation, Murray City Power can continue its commitment to provide reliable electric service to our community at the lowest reasonable rate. v If anyone should want to report a street lighting 2 problemj they may call at any time, day or night. , , civic-mind- 264-265- When My Feet Fit Under Their Table, They Made The Rules long as your feet fit under my table, youll do as I say." Perhaps they feel guilty about laying down the law when they have such a limited amount of time to spend with their children. But home life will be much more pleasant if there is mutual respect. Maybe the problem lies in the work ethic. Our generation tends to be slightly lazy. Being a good parent requires a great deal of effort. Maybe we just aren't willing to expend the energy. So the true marriage is you to your own flesh. The world's problems arise from the Bible wherein it says that God created man in his own image, both male and female. Because of that, many feel they have the authority of God, but we're only God's children. Finally, we know the flesh dies, but what happens to us? " Editor, ; . . Likes Our Message To provide a bed than to allow friends or coworkers to put themselves and others at risk? The adage about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure is appropriate when developing strategies to curb drunk drivers. Drunk driving is preventable. People know better and must be held accountable for their actions. Drinking too much and then getting behind the wheel and killing someone is not an accidental event. Drunk driving is not only a national tragedy, it is a national disgrace. As we celebrate the end of one year and the beginning of a new one, let us each individually resolve to do our part to eliminate this disgrace. . i Powerful Idea We continue to be too tolerant of a dangerous minority who leave parties, bars and restaurants with attitudes like "I drive better when I'm drunk," "I've only had a few" and "Nobody drives my car but me." It may be difficult as a host to stick your neck out and actively prevent someone from driving who has been celebrating too much. But isn't it better to call a cab, offer a ride or " mmm ."' Editorial , o mi ' ' I have been following in the news, with great interest, the Salt Lake County Commissioners as they have been preparing the 1988 budget. Along with many other interested citizens, I attended the Thursday, Dec. 1 6 public budget hearing. I commend the County Commissioners, under the direction of Commission Chairman Bart Barker, for acting responsibly as they wrestled with the difficult problems. The commissioners refused to consider broad tax increases in spite of a very tight revenue picture. I applaud the commissioners for trimming nearly $15 million from proposed budgets and for reducing the size of government. All this being accomplished while Salt Lake County's population continues to grow. The commissioners demonstrated sincere sensitivity in not eliminating programs that serve the truly needy or vital county services. Hats off to the Salt Lake County Commissioners for a fitting display of fiscal conservatism and responsible leadership. Richard H.
