Show 5 Alta Boys Earn Second In State Cross Country i SALT LAKE. "It was a bit of surprise and we're very happy about it," stated Alta high cross country coach Ray Jenson after his boys team captured runner-u- p honors in last Wednesday's 4A State Cross Country meet at Sugarhouse Park. Alta's Kregg Chidester, as expected, took top individual honors in the boys' race with a time of 15:16, over 18 seconds faster than anyone else in his division and, in fact, faster than anyone in any division. Viewmont won the team title with 51 points, while Alta ended up with 105. Among the other area teams, Brighton was seventh with 170 points. In the girls' event, however, Brighton was fourth and Alta sixth, with 149 and 183 points respectively. No other local team finished among the top 14. Mountain View, out of Region Two, won the girls' event with 25 points. Following Chidester for Alta, Dave Smith was 14th at 16:17.8 and Neil Lundberg 18th at 16:21.7. Tom Kimball was 22nd and Ron Blair 53rd (among runners representing full teams). Brighton's top individual was Dave Larsen ninth at 16:01.6 with Brad Peacock 29th, Russ Ward 38th, Erik Ekberg 41st, and Scott Wilhite 54th. Though not sending a team, Hillcrest did have two runners in the top 20, Bob Johns 13th with a 16:16.7 and Steve Sumsion, running under the influence of a viral infection, 17th at 16:20.9. In the girls' race, the top finishing individual for a local school was Brighton's Vicki Armstrong, taking eighth with a time of 19:29.0. Teammate Pam Barstow finished 14th with a 20:04.8. For Alta, Sharon Knott was the highest placer, earning 20th with a time of 20:23.1. - Continuing on for Brighton, Missy Mills was 33rd, Mellaney Williams 45th and Jill Saurer 49th. Alta followed with Angela Brown 22nd, Barbara Allred 43rd, Annett Allred 47th and Tammy Burton 51st. Again, the above finishes, after 20th, represent runners from full squads only.
