An ancient Chinese Proverb reads: Tell me, I forget. Show me, I remember. Involve me, I understand. Resource teachers at Monte Vista elementary believe that this ancient saying holds special meaning when applied to the children they teach on y basis. a According to teacher Cathy Andersen, "Because of the severity of their learning disabilities, these children learn more by actual exSOUTH day-to-da- periences." Because of this Mrs. Andersen and teacher Joyce Jones have collaborated with the South Jordan police department to provide a day of recreational learning for the seven children in their resource group. "Self-containe- resource pro d grams require teaching. Through testing, class performance and observations, the children qualify for placement in the program," said Mrs. Andersen. "These children have average or above intelligence, but because of perceptual problems, memory problems and other learning-relate- d problems, they qualify for this program until they are able to perform in the regular classroom," she added. According to Mrs. Andersen, "It is not uncommon for these children to have had limited social experiences. Usually they are not socially outgoing." In an effort to provide a stimulating and learning situation for them that is also a positive social experience, the teachers try to take the children on field trips. "Through field trips in their small group, there one-to-o- semi-conscio- is more opportunity to experience activities first hand." A field trip also provides an atmosphere for them to ask questions and interact more freely with one another. During the week the South Jordan Police Department has arranged with the school to transport the children for a few hours of free swimming and bowling. They will then enjoy a picnic lunch at the city park. "We feel very grateful 7-- for the generosity of Chief Duane Sutherland and the police department, said Andersen. "They give of themselves on their time of to make sure these special children have a good learning experience. I feel that they truly love and care for the welfare of all children," said $150. 19 TAURUS Apr. 20 21-A- Andersen. response by Farr elicited a round of spirited guffaws from the roomful of people where this writer was watching. Look at it as a compliment to your tastes. VIRGO response time was determined by noting the time a fire is reported and the time an engine arrives. Now Farr simply defines response time as the time between the fire report and the time the first police car arrives. The lone PSO is almost useless until a fire engine arrives so no quicker response has actually occurred. Such misleading reporting is analogous to the farmer who quits raising grapes to plant watermelons and subsequently reports that the size of his vine fruit has increased. 4. Since the PSO program was instituted there have been numerous instances of incompetent handling of fire calls by cross-traine-d policemen and vice versa. Many of these errors have resulted in property damage and personal injury. 5. Officers inclined to advise the city council andor public of the massive opposition to the program and its many failures, mistakes and coverups have been threatened with being fired by the administration. 6. The West Jordan PSO program is a laughing stock among police officers and firefighters throughout the valley. It is time for West Jordan to admit the failure of public safety and to return to its former successful police and fire departments. The safety of its citizens demand it. It is time for Director Farr to resign and allow another to rebuild and repair the damage that has been inflicted. His remaining integrity pleads for it. i - LEO . Lance D. In fact, the officers who have left West Jordan because of its failing program have invariably been high achievers in the police academy, police work, higher education, or combinations of all three. This assertion is borne out by the quality of the agencies which have subsequently hired the former officers and by their levels of achievement in those new agencies. Clearly, chronic malcontents achieve nowhere. The facts in West Jordan's public safety program as observed by this writer and others are as follows : 1. There is now and has been, since the inception of public safety, a debilitating morale problem and high attrition rate among officers hired and trained at West Jordan taxpayers' expense. 2. There has been no money saved in West Jordan because of public safety. The "lower cost" of services allegedly reflected in Fair's budget is merely the result of the low pay that West Jordan PSO's receive. It is manifest that any agency can claim cost savings to the public by paying its employees poorly enough, but the lower cost should certainly not be at- - lIpQ-- -- Resents Name Calling Dear Editor: I watched with some amusement last Wednesday night as West Jordan Public Safety Director Kal Farr attempted to defend that city's failing PSO program in front of Channel Five TV cameras.
