Browning, presi dent, reported recently. Net income was $444,487, or 42 cents per share, up from $250,208, or 24 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales for the 1968 quarter totaled $7,485,145, up 40 per cent from the $5,334,562, record ed in the same period of 1967. Browning cautioned stockhold ers not to expect a similar rate of increase ti be maintained. He said many dealers have placed their orders earlier this year than they did last year. Evidence that the prospect of peace still is the major trading influence appeared Wednesaay morning when trie rumor a site had been agreed upon sparked a strong surge of buying. Despite i quick denial, the list held most gams throughout the day. The continued flow of better than anticipated first quarter earnings also provided buying incentive and another spurt in the merger and acquisition business also gave the list some features. The picture was not alto gether rosy but a further tight ening of the nation's credit reins, a delay in congressional approval of a combined tax hike - spending cut package which many investors feel is necessary for economic stabilityand a surprising drop in il car sales did little more than temper enthusiasm. Many brokers believe this pattern of buying on favorable news while playing down any mid-Apr- discouraging news will continue on the near term unless there is a radical change in the in- ternational picture. Robert R. Allen, of Shearson, Hammill & Co., a large brokerage firm, says "While the market seems to have passed through the euphoric phase of early April, it is evident investors are not through buying stocks aggressively." He feels everyone has had time to realize that the road to peace will entail delays and pitfalls but the plus factors have won out and there are more than enough latecomers to the "peace" rally to keep it going for a while. The United Press International stock market indicator jumped 2.20 to 117.69 while the New York Stock Exchange Index and Standard & Poor's 500 stock index also made good headway. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 8.33 to 906.C3 but ihe rail average, which had beeu showing strength in previous weeks, gave up 1.64 to 234.67. Of the record 1,658 issues crossing the tape, 987 advanced, 59 declined and 122 remained unchanged. Trore were 309 new 1968 highs set and only 73 new lows.
