KUGEL, M.D. Chairman of rh Section on Child Davelopmant, American Academy of Pediatrics the kids do there is play," she said. "Education is so important these days that I'd rather teach my d to read." As a pediatrician and consultant to nursery schools for more than a decade, I've heard such complaints many times. My position is that rushing; a child into formal education rarely pays off in the long: run. Before he can find any real excitement and lasting value from academics, he first has to Be in a rich variety of broadening experiences. And before he can make much use of his native intelligence and acquired knowledge, he has to learn the give and take of getting along with others. I also believe that a good nursery school can help a child achieve these important goals better than any other medium. In most cases, his experiences there will make him a fast--e-r learner, once he enters a regular classroom. as told to Charles Remsberg three-year-ol- CLEANEST, EASIEST, SAFEST Way To Rid Your Place Of RJDOH MOUSErPRUFE it to dean, to easy lo use. Nursery-schotime is "structured" that is, carefully designed and supervised to' encourage creativity while meeting special, individual needs. i Kathy. for example... was an extremely shy child when I suggested that her parents send her to nursery school. I explained that her .inability to interact, well with other youngsters could make learning difficult for her once she entered grade school. At nursery school, understanding ol Three-year-o- ld PRESIDENT'S COUNCIL ON PHYSICAL FITNESS 10 Family Wttky,Dttembr It, lHi teachers skillfully worked with Kathy's problem. They gave her special jobs to do, such as passing' out crackers and juice. Doing this built up her confidence and also brought her into pleasant contact with the other children. As a result, she became less fearful of them. Also, the teachers deliberately read to Kathy and another child at the same time. During the stories, the two youngsters naturally exchanged glances and eventually made comments about their shared experience. By this subtle device, Kathy was drawn into sharing her emotions and thoughts. An Interest In ploying with others waa nurtured, too. At first the teachers arranged for her to play with just one other child by having them pull each other in a wagon. Then as Kathy grew to understand and enjoy companionship, her play group was steadily enlarged. By the time she finished nursery school, she had made definite progress toward cracking out of her shell. Of course, Kathy had not experienced a total change in personality; few persons ever do. But she had become less timid around other children and better able to assert herself when the occasion demanded. Any number of special problems may be alleviated in nursery school. For example, children , who have a senseless fear of animals can be helped. When they're able to watch, feed, touch, and enjoy turtles, ham sters, and other small pets at nursery their unhealthy apprehension often fades away.'" Some children may present eating problems at home, such aa refusing to drink milk.. At nursery school, however, they see other youngsters drinking milk as a matter of course, and they are likely to join in gradually, particularly if they find that their abstinence brings them no spev cial attention. But if s not only "problem" youngsters who benefit from nursery school. Experiences there can help virtually any child of ; three or four. Youngsters that age are reaching out for more new friends, more new experiences, more new Jdeas than even the best home can offer. Even intensely devoted parents may find it difficult to meet the challenge of the average preschool child's insatiable curiosity or provide the necessary range of. toys and paraphernalia with which he can test and develop all the new skills of which he is capable. Sending your offspring to nursery school is not a sign that you've failed him but rather a sign that you want to enrich his life. In several studies, researchers have found that nursery-schoexperiences improve children's IQs by as much as 30 points. And some educators now feel that nursery schools are the first step in preventing dropouts in later years because of the adjustments that they help youngsters make. school, ol |
