They're a great credit to the gridiron game, which over the years has managed to draw more than its share of criticism from the rank and file of the population. For the last two years I've been, calling Coach Hudspeth the "Poor Man's Knute Rockne." I used to say it with some jest in my voice but now when I call him that it will have some ring of authenticity to it. It was generally agreed that Coach Hal Kopp, former BYU football coach, was a pretty tough taskmaster on the practice field. Well, take it from this observer, Coach Hudspeth is just can carry just as peneas hard a driver. His tongue-lashiridid. Coach as a Kopp's sting trating . For instance, before this fall's game with Wyoming, Coach Hudspeth caught one of his charges not going at full tilt during a practice session. He promptly ordered the gridder to the dressing room so the player could give some thought to his lackadaisical attitude and repent' of his ways. But Coach Hudspeth is absolutely fair and honest when he . levels criticism on a player. The players know this and they respect him for it. That probably is one of the big reasons the morale and esprit de corps of the Cougar squad has remained high through victory and defeat Still another reason why. the spirit of Hudspeth's team remains high both in success and adversity is his constant winning and positive approach to the game. When he first came - to BYU he said his philosophy, would be to look forward With enthusiasm and never backward with a defeatist attitude. trailed and the 50-2- ter Jerry Chambers leading the fast break.
