Show Foliage Plan t Has Seen t Of Lavender ' gathered at the home of Mr. and j - ' .' between the fingers. Fern Leaved Lavender (Laven- dula multifida) is a lacy, frilly plant, eventually1, growing about two feet high. Another attractive ). one is Fringed Lavender (L. Although these are classed as foliage plants, they bloom quite freely, bearing spikes of lavender - to - blue flowers above the leaves. This year I plan to add French Lavender (L. to my" collection; it doesn't grow quite as tall as the others, and is said to have dark blue flowers. If you've; never tried growing plants for fragrance, do try some this winter to add a new. dimension to your pleasure in house plants. Lavender is propagated best by taken cuttings of yearld-growt- h with a heel, in' late autumn or early spring (.exception: Fern Leaved, a biennial, comes rather well from seed. Keep the cuttings shaded and r moist while rooting; only the Fern leaved will continue to J need , fairly heavy watering after roots have formed and the plants are potted up. As a rule, the "lavenders like a light soil and only normal amounts of water, and f too much will cause the plants to deteriorate rapidly. Unfortunately, one sign of over- watering is wilt, which indicates to most of us that the plant needs more water, although these plants are trying signal that they've I had enough. If you are interested in scented plants, there are many that can easily be included in your indoor collection. Besides .the lavenders and rosemary, you can have car damon,- marjotam, pennyroyal, sage, and lemon verbena, to name a few. Some of these besides being aromatic, can be used to flavor special dishes, if cooking is one of your hobbies. Questions and Answers What do you do with visitors who handle delicate plants and bruise the leaves? Is there any polite way to discourage them? About all you Can do is to ask as politely as 'possible that they do not touch the. plants, please. To even handle the pots. of some one else's plants is, to me, the height of bad manners, and even in a flower shop or greenhouse no should be lifted from the bench without permission. - den-tata- stoe-cha- s) ,;' Salt Lake Temple Scene Of frhomas-Rbs- e Marriage Rites LDS Temple was the scene of the marriage cere- The Salt Lake ' monv unitina JoAnn Thomas, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Thomas, formerly" of Spanish Fork1, and Dennis S. By ALICIA HART NEA Staff Correspondent The Winterhalter portraits of Queen Victoria are charming;. And they are a lesson in th ereation of beauty. For in the same period that Winterhalter was doing court paintings of the English queen, she was frequently photographed. There is a great gap between the reality of the photographs and the beauty of the paintings. Yet no cne could say that Winterhalter falsified or turned the queen into a pretty doll. Actually his paintings of her are very close to the truth but with this difference: where the queen's expression was habitually dour, the artist made it pleasantly pensive.
