JONES On July 24, more than a score of custom built soap. box cars will line up on the fbrink of Derby Downs , in Provo for the opening heats in the 1959 Utah Soap Box Derby. The official racewill open at 11 a.m. to determine who will represent the state at the National Derby in Akron, O. Sponsors are The Daily Herald, P. E. Ashton Co. and the Utah Soap Box Derby Association. Fre-rac- e activities will begin on Thursday, July 23, when cars will be officially inspected and weighed in and the boys will be issued their derby helmets at the P. E. Ashton Company in Prdvo. AH cars will have to undergo, inspection between 1 jand 5 p.m. on' the day before the race and ' the cars will be on display for the public between 7:20 and 9 p.m. in the showroom of the automobile company. The contestants will be served refreshments and presented wl-l- i swimming passes for that evening , by Provo Rotary Club. On the morning of the race each contestant mustmake a trial run before the 11 a.m. starting gun. The course will be open at 7 a.m., for the boys to start their trials. Place of each contestant in: the elimination heats will be determined before the derby actually begins. Any boy interested in testing his car on Derby Downs ,may do so any. time between today and July 24 if they will contact Ward Heal, derby director; They must be accompanied by either a sponsor or parent when testing their cars. Mr. Heal can be reached at Heal Realty. Rotary Park, locaied immediately south of the city ball park, and swimming pool at Second East and Fourth South, is a credit to the men who, through the" past eleven years, contributed countless hours of labor and considerable money to make the park and its equipment possible. The flowers, will be exhibited in Alpine Stake Tabernacle and the rules and regulations concerning the exhibit will' be announced later. Flower growers of American Fork and surrounding communities will have the opportunity of displaying their choice garden specimens. Emphasis this year is also being placed upon the section open to junior flower raisers. Following the custom jpf preceding years the bloom, which in the opinion of the judges is the best of the entire 'show, will bring to its exhibitor the grand champion award.
