He has required a daily blood transfusion since March 7 of about a pint a day. The blood needed is of a very rare type. The hospital's supply of blood ran short Wednesday, necessitating an emergency request for donors by the blood bank of Hawaii. Five minutes after the request was broadcast over the air, calls flooded the blood bank with offers of that type of blood. Forty donors kept the blood bank staff mem!ber3 working almost four hours overtime. The bank planned to reopen at 8 a.m. today to receive more calls. A hospital spokesman said U could not be determined for how long, the boy will need daily transfusions. Early popes performed the commemoration, by washirfg the feet of 12, the number of the apostles. But at the turn of the sixth cen- tury, according to a Roman Catholic tradition, Pope Gregory the Great found a 13th pair of feet before him. He washed them, too, without question, and according to tradition Christ then appeared to the Pontiff in a vision and told him the feet were his own. Since that distant day, up to 1870 when the Italians stormed Rome and placed an end to the temporal power of the pope s, popes carried out the hallowed rite listing the number of persons chosen for that honor as "12 plus one." The rite takes place today at the singing of the V angel inside the magnificent basilica. The 13 priests have been selected by th-archpriest of St. John's, Benedetto Cardinal' Alois! Masella, among ecclesiasts of the basilica itself. eastern through the death of a tips and secedes and that's that? Not quite. Secession, as a number of Southern states found out some years ago, is a tough thing Q bring about. Prof. Herbert Wechsler, professor of constitutional law at Colum ibia University, points out that secession the peaceful kind involves consent of the state Legislature and action of both houses of Congress. The President's signature and approval in a stat referendum are not constitutionally provided for, he says, but customarily are required by Congress, which has the right to require such things. Several of the mayor's pet schemes have been turned down by the Legislature, dominated Dy upstate interests and the Republican Party. r New York City pays between 55 and 0 per cent of the state's total revenue, according to Wagner, and gets back only about 35 per cent of that revenue.
