Hy’s character was defined by his incredible integrity, endless generosity, and courage. Hy took on every challenge with great gusto, and was known in sports and in business for his creativity and competitive spirit. Hy was known as a man who was never afraid to stand up and do the right thing. He approached even the most impossible situations with the unwavering optimism and positivity of a true entrepreneur. His foresight, and fearless nature drove the creation of many major commercial and residential developments that shaped Summit County’s Snyderville Basin. In partnership with his dear friend Larry Knowles, Hy spent 40 years building and investing in the water business, and built a municipal water system that now serves more than 6,000 homes and businesses in the Snyderville Basin. Hy accomplished all of this without using a penny of taxpayer money. Hy worked hard for his water company and his customers to keep and maintain the company he proudly built. As president of Summit Water, Hy delivered the cleanest water at the most affordable price. Hy’s dedication to his water company and his customers took him to the Utah Supreme Court five times where he won five unanimous victories. His contributions in business shaped the landscape of Park City, Summit County, and Utah. Hy was proud to be a lifelong Utah resident, residing in both Salt Lake and Park City. Hy at- Hy Saunders tended East High School where he excelled athletically, lettering in football, garnering All-State honors in basketball and reaching a top 20 national ranking in tennis. He earned a business degree from the University of Utah, where he developed rich, lifelong friendships as a Beta Theta Pi and a member of the Ute men’s tennis team. As a Ute tennis star, Hy was undefeated in both singles and doubles in conference play. Hy earned an MBA from New York University and subsequently worked at Grey Advertising. When Pyke Manufacturing gave him the opportunity to return to Utah, he jumped at the chance. After returning to Utah, Hy founded Saunders Land investment Corporation and Summit Water Distribution Company, serving as President, leader, and visionary for both companies, for MEMORIAL SERVICE over 40 years. Hy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014, and as the disease progressed, even the smallest challenges became overwhelming. Hy had always been a man of resolute strength, one who would boldly stand up for his beliefs, his family, his business and those who were unable to stand up for themselves. This terrible disease began to interfere with his ability to be the man he always was. As the community and friends rallied around us, our home was filled with love and support, which was the greatest testament to Hy’s beautiful legacy. Hy enjoyed the love and support of his treasured sons Mike, Harper, and Brody Saunders, his wife of 40 years Debra Saunders, his daughters in law Hannah and Amanda Saunders, his grandchildren Owen and Stella Saunders, his loyal dogs, along with Cindy Sanders and Stuart Knowles whom Hy loved as family. There will be a private celebration of life for family and close friends. In lieu of flowers please give to one of Hy’s favorite charities, Alzheimer’s research, Special Olympics, because his son Harper was a champion Special Olympic athlete, The Wounded Warrior Project, which greatly impacts the lives of his niece and nephew Amber and Todd and The Buffalo Bill Historical Center, which he enjoyed with friends Naoma and Hal Tate. We sincerely thank the first responders, friends, family and neighbors from the bottom of our hearts for your love and incredible support. 4 Bedrooms | 5 Bathrooms | 6,883 Square Feet | $3,000,000 An entertainer’s dream from the kitchen to the private, park-like backyard and expansive deck.
